2016 Postmortem
Related: About this forumOK, Bernie's going to a Vatican conference, by invitation.
Looks like he's going to have to jump on a flight right after the debate on the 14th to make it to Rome on time. The debate starts at 9 PM EDT. He might take off by Midnight. Red-eye time. I hope he sleeps well on planes. I sure don't. Jet lag may play a role, too.
While he's flying and attending, the media's going to be interested in what happened at the debate, I'm sure. Normally a candidate with a primary elections coming right up would be stumping like crazy the day after a debate in the state where the primary's being held. Bernie's going to lose that day and will be flying overnight again to get back to New York the day after attending that conference, or speaking at it.
I hope he sleeps well on planes. He's going to need to be at his sharpest, since he'll be under a lot of pressure to make some campaign appearances as soon as possible in New York. There's not much time before Tuesday.
I wonder if this trip to the Vatican will be worth it in terms of his primary campaign. Maybe it will. I'm sure some media folks will follow him to Rome, so maybe we'll hear from him there. I don't know. I doubt he'll be taking a day there after the conference, though. I don't think he has any days to spare right now.
Conference in Rome on the 15th. NY Primary on the 19th. I don't know, but if I were running, I wouldn't let that weekend get away from me, really. Still, it's his choice. We'll see how it all works out.
Good luck be with you, Bernie. Rest while you can.

VATICAN CITY/WASHINGTON (Reuters) - U.S. Democratic presidential candidate Bernie Sanders was invited to speak at an April 15 Vatican event by the Vatican, a senior papal official said on Friday, denying a report that Sanders had invited himself.
"I deny that. It was not that way," Monsignor Marcelo Sanchez Sorondo told Reuters in a telephone interview while he was traveling in New York. Sorondo, a close aide to Pope Francis, is chancellor of the Pontifical Academy of Social Sciences, which is hosting the event.
He said it was his idea to invite Sanders.
A Bloomberg report quoted Margaret Archer, president of the Pontifical Academy of Social Sciences, as saying that Sanders had broken with protocol by failing to contact her office first.
"This is not true and she knows it. I invited him with her consensus," said Sorondo, who is senior to Archer.

(146,324 posts)I hope it doesn't cut into his campaign schedule too much. It's going to be tight, to say the least. I suppose it looks good to be at some Vatican conference, but I'm not sure it's such a big deal. Now, if he was having a private audience with the Pope to discuss matters of import, it would look pretty presidential, for sure.
I don't know. I wouldn't do it that close to a very important primary if I were running. Seems risky, just in terms of lost campaign time. His opponent will have an entire day to get the jump on him on some issue or another on Friday, and Saturday is stiff iffy for campaign activities after two whirlwind overnight flights.
It doesn't even look like there will be an audience photo with the Pope. Those are nice to have on the front page of the papers.

(38,437 posts)It explains why he asked for the invite. He can always say he met with the Pope even if he does not.
But, yeah, it will be logistical nightmare. Nothing a high speed private jet won't solve. That is, after all, how the 1%ers roll.

(51,020 posts)He also tried to make it look like he would be meeting with the Pope. Considering what happened with the Kentucky dimwit I would say the odds are against a photo op. The Pope is not likely to want to get involved in a political campaign.

Could the optics be any better? How can the MSM NOT cover Sanders going to the Vatican?
Obviously there is a bond between the Pope and Sanders as allies in the same big battle against an excess of greed.

(14,195 posts)So tell me, what do you think of Bill dissing Black Lives Matter & lying (according to politico and huffpo) about his record in the process? From HuffPo:
Heres what he told protesters at a campaign rally for Hillary Clinton in Philadelphia:
They say the welfare reform bill increased poverty. Then why did we have the largest drop in African American poverty in history when I was president? The largest in history. What happened was, all these Republicans got into the Supreme Court elected President Bush 5 to 4, then all these Republicans took over state legislatures. We left em with enough money to take care of all the poor people who couldnt go to work on welfare. We left em with the money they had before the welfare rolls went down 60 percent. The Republicans took it away, and [these protesters are] blaming me.
This is not true. Poverty dropped during the Clinton years not because of welfare reform, but because the entire American economy was being juiced by a massive stock market bubble. No credible economist even disputes this. The Clinton bubble was fueled by the aggressive financial deregulatory policies of Clinton and his Federal Reserve chairman, Alan Greenspan. When the stock market bubble burst, millions of people who previously would have received welfare fell into poverty.
Welfare reform was an intentional effort to curb financial assistance to poor people, on the grounds that many were simply too lazy to get a job. Clinton turned over a federal program to states, who were effectively allowed to slash welfare funding and impose new work requirements on people who received assistance. Even Republican co-architects of welfare reform concede that the program ended up hurting the poor.

(146,324 posts)of an asset to Hillary's campaign. He tends to blurt when he should think. It's not my campaign, though, and I imagine it's hard to tell Bill Clinton, "Watch what you say, and don't speak nonsense, please."
Will he do much harm to the campaign? Probably not. But, he's not doing much good for it, either.
