Maybe Bernie knows that it doesn't matter

what he does, as far as New York is concerned at this point. Otherwise, I can't imagine leaving the state that close to the election. Maybe internal polling shows a solid win for Hillary. Then, this Vatican trip is more easily explained.

Just a thought...

Sanders is a man of his word and walks his talk. Here is an opportunity for him to do so yet again.

And you probably don't know this being from MN, but NY state is number 5 for the number Catholic residents. I am sure this will hurt him so badly.

Oh, but really here is the ass kicker. What about Clinton? I mean, why is she leaving NY to go to Hong Kong on the same day to do a $2700.00 minimum per person fundraiser?

Maybe internal polling shows a solid win for Sanders and she needs the money to compete?

She asked and he said yep. My assumption after seeing that is that he assumed she was asking about the Vatican invite, but regardless, you guys certainly like to make a mountain out of a molehill - ALL THE FREAKING TIME.

It's just pathetic. Clinton calls him unqualified in every way except using the actual word, and he fires back and you guys flip out - even though nobody specifically found video of him saying "she is unqualified".

I understand that you guys are desperate because your candidate is so flawed, but to use cheap Karl Rove style word play and cheap shots is beneath Democrats, even only supposed ones...

are 2 very different things.

If the first occurs - don't bother to revisit. It means nothing in terms of Bernie's visit there.

If the second occurs (and not an incident repeated with every attendee), please let me know and I shall acknowledge the meeting.

The difference in our attitudes toward this blunder - he will be my choice he win the nomination and am hoping he can mostly stay above the fray. However, he is a politician, after all, and prone to overestimating his importance.

Hillary was scheduled to be in Hong Kong for a fundraiser at the very same time. (She may have cancelled, though, bad optics.)

At least you are not still concerned with jet lag.

Oh, and a vatican invite is not something easily obtained; not like he looked at some polls and said oops! Gotta wangle an invite to the Vatican!

If you really thought Bernie was hurting his campaign by making the trip to Rome you'd be happy instead of fretting over it. The real reason he's doing it is almost certainly because economic justice has been the central issue of his campaign (in fact, his entire political life), and he thinks this conference is important enough that he wants to be there and give more exposure to those issues. Bernie isn't all about political maneuvering, unlike Hillary; I don't think he's letting polls decide whether he should go. But thanks for your concern anyhow.

Fri Apr 8, 2016, 08:55 PM

1. He thinks his campaign will benefit more from the publicity surrounding the trip than one more day of local retail politicking.

2. He sees this personally as a once in a lifetime opportunity, a very special day in his life, and he doesn't want to let it pass him by. And he hopes that one day more or less of local campaigning is not going to make the decisive difference in the primary.

to the Vatican's conference mobilizes almost every
HRC supporter here.

They would love to find some nefarious motive to
smash him with, but, alas, cannot find it. Thus
they try to put their own spin on it, and find that
it just sinks.

To let Bernie make his own decision is even too
much for some of them, but they have to keep
this issue going, because they have nothing else.

Funny, how things work sometimes.

And I suspect the internal polling in both campaigns show him essentially tied with her -- otherwise why would her campaign be so desperate to destroy and disqualify him (their words, remember)?

Plus, he's got Jane. I bet she does events in NYS while he's away. Not to mention that there will probably be a lot of media coverage of his trip. Not all of it good, naturally, but still a lot of coverage.
