(57,349 posts)VATICAN CITY/WASHINGTON (Reuters) - U.S. Democratic presidential candidate Bernie Sanders was invited to speak at an April 15 Vatican event by the Vatican, a senior papal official said on Friday, denying a report that Sanders had invited himself.
"I deny that. It was not that way," Monsignor Marcelo Sanchez Sorondo told Reuters in a telephone interview while he was traveling in New York. Sorondo, a close aide to Pope Francis, is chancellor of the Pontifical Academy of Social Sciences, which is hosting the event.
He said it was his idea to invite Sanders.
A Bloomberg report quoted Margaret Archer, president of the Pontifical Academy of Social Sciences, as saying that Sanders had broken with protocol by failing to contact her office first.
"This is not true and she knows it. I invited him with her consensus," said Sorondo, who is senior to Archer.

(20,709 posts)Because let's face it, there's not much difference. Like Krugman wrote today, Bernie is becoming a Bernie Bro.

(63,912 posts)I really wish he hadn't gone off on Bernie so personally and I am embarrassed that he did. He is better than this. He can have his opinions and god bless, But he's gotten so shrill lately it disappoints the hell out of me...
DanTex
(20,709 posts)And, yes, it was a lie. Look, I've heard all the excuses. But I'm not 15 years old (anymore, where does the time go?). We all know politics, and we know what it means to call someone "unqualified", and we know that this is going to be appearing in GOP ads, in fact, I heard a number of GOP talking heads gleefully say "I agree with Bernie Sanders" the very next day.
I've read your posts here, I like you and respect you a great deal. And your disagreement with Krugman is totally legitimate. But I hope you see what's going on here on DU with the "Bernie or Bust" stuff, and the throwing under the bus of everyone from Krugman to John Lewis to Barbara Boxer to Dolores Huerta to Bill DeBlasio.
And if you don't, here's what the last post before yours responding to me had to say about Krugman:
How do you feel about that?
CTyankee
(63,912 posts)I give credit where credit is due. And it makes it all that much harder to accept what he says about Bernie. I don't understand why he can't agree to disagree and leave it at that.

(1,947 posts)vote for sending nearly 5000 americans to die in Iraq, only one candidate of either party holds that distinction. But you knew that. Makes subway tokens seem a bit less important. The 20,000+ injured I am sure aren't to concerned with subway tokens. I'm betting a vote is more important to them, wouldn't you say?
DanTex
(20,709 posts)Coming up next: your excuse for Bernie's pro-NRA votes...
timmymoff
(1,947 posts)When did congress hold a vote for removal of all firearms from Americans? With his vote, do you seriously think he is responsible for 30,000 deaths? Was the vote to ban guns ? Now with Hillary's vote of sending people to war, was her vote causal in the outcome? There is no need to make excuses at all because wasn't your candidate the one in 2008 claiming Obama wanted your guns? Remember Hillary pandering to the gun lobby in 2008, and Obama mocking her as "Annie Oakley" I find it humorous how your candidate has had so many stances she can get beat up from both sides. I bet that has something to do with her high negatives, her duplicity.
To make it simpler. Bernie Sander's vote was not causal to 30,000 Americans dying a year due to firearms. Hillary Clinton's Iraq war vote was causal of 5000 soldier's deaths, and 30,000 wounded. Plus a few hundred thousand Iraqi's deaths, many more displaced, and led to isis.
I am very anxious to continue this debate especially with the weaksauce you brought to it. Have a good day.
DanTex
(20,709 posts)for all the deaths in Iraq. A single vote in the house/senate doesn't tip the scales.
timmymoff
(1,947 posts)like it or not, you own the consequences of that vote. No need to attempt to spin it. She owns every result of the war she voted for. She knew the people who were going to be running the war and didn't see that as a problem. She owns the deaths on all sides, the wounded, the displaced and even the tortured. Again, all the actors of the war, president, vice president, sec defense, sec of state etc. we're known quantities, she chose poorly. This is one of many reasons she is unqualified to be president. Have a good evening.
DanTex
(20,709 posts)requirement for background checks at all. Thankfully, he failed. If he had succeeded, how many more deaths would there have been? Who knows? Then he voted for legal immunity. This time he and the NRA succeeded. How many people could have been saved if the gun industry could have been held accountable in the same way that the tobacco industry was? Who knows?
What we do know is that guns kill 30,000 Americans every year, and Bernie has been part of the political problem, which ensures that the deaths continue, for decades.
timmymoff
(1,947 posts)if so when, because without that your argument doesn't fly.
DanTex
(20,709 posts)gun laws that would save tens of thousands of lives per year. Thanks to people like him, even requiring guns to be registered doesn't even get a vote on the floor.
timmymoff
(1,947 posts)and continue to do so. I'm pretty sure a d- rating is nothing you tout when seeking the gun vote. Good luck with your next batch of whoppers. I know this stings but you will get through it.
DanTex
(20,709 posts)timmymoff
(1,947 posts)how you wished to equate gun deaths to Bernie Sanders but wished to negate every soldiers death, dismemberment, every Iraqi's etc. as previously stated. Par would be making excuses for such judgments of error as you have done. Until there is a vote for complete removal you can not equate gun deaths to his vote. You can equate the results of war to hers.

On The View today-Sanders said he was going to meet with the POPE
One of hosts said to the audience--.....
Host: You're meeting with the POPE?
Bernie: "Yup" (sitting nodding)
Then the host told the audience --Pope Francis has invited Bernie sanders...Clap clap
Sanders said he was meeting with the Pope. Then when the host told the audience he said nothing--He just nodded ...!!(very short You-tube clip
WHOW!
PS--Sanders is NOT meeting with Pope Francis

(57,349 posts)Bernie can't be bought, that confuses and upsets people who don't know how else to do their job. It's also why so many of her supporters automatically assume he's crooked even though there's absolutely no evidence of that. They don't recognize an honest politician when they see one.

It's pretty funny, actually.
The campaign is running off the rails. They had figured Hillary would have locked it up long ago. She's a terrible campaigner with no credible experience or platform, and the more people see of her, the less they like her.
That's why Bill has gone all racist and Hillary is shrieking at anyone who asks her an inconvenient question.
They should just hang it up and go back to their money-laundering "foundation."
PowerToThePeople
(9,610 posts)The thing is, the whole foundation is what it is based on the premise that Hillary would become POTUS.
If this does not occur, there may be a lot of investors looking for refunds.

Seen on the View 8 April 2016:
Joy Behar: "Aren't you going to meet with the Pope?"
Sanders: "YUP!"
Fabricator, deceiver, tall-story teller, that's Sanders. What a disappointment he is.
