2016 Postmortem
Related: About this forumBernie's invitation to the Vatican conference has really got some people wound up.
Or, more accurately, it's got a whole lot of panties bunched up. Let's see if I can itemize all the reasons why it's either impossible or wrong or terrible:
1. Bernie invited himself! Actually, he didn't, a fact that was quickly pointed out. When Margaret Archer's boss explained that he had personally invited Bernie to the conference, the next complaint was:
2. Bernie shouldn't go because he'll be tired and jet lagged! I'm sure he would appreciate Hillary's supporters' concern, but for a one-or-two-day turn he should be fine. But thanks anyhow. Then there was:
3. Bernie shouldn't go because he needs to stay in New York and campaign! Again, the concern is sweet but shouldn't Hillary's supporters be glad he'll be gone for a couple of days? And won't Hillary be in Hollywood schmoozing with George Clooney for a $350K fundraiser at the same time instead of campaigning in NY? But then another complaint appeared:
4. It's an obscure conference put on by an obscure organization that nobody has ever heard of with a bunch of people who aren't even famous, and anyhow he'll just be sitting in the peanut gallery! So who cares that he got invited to some silly conference that nobody ever heard of??!11? Hillary didn't get invited so I guess it must not be very important. Or else maybe somebody is mad that she didn't get invited. Anyhow, there was another problem:
5. He can't go because he can't pay for his flight with campaign funds! It's true that he can't pay with campaign funds, but he's not too poor to buy a plane ticket himself, although some people complain that he's too poor to be president. On the other hand maybe he's really a lot richer and he's hiding all his money. Now I'm confused. And then they started checking flight schedules and worried some more:
6. He can't go because he won't be able to get a flight back to NY right after the conference! Yes, somebody was so worried about Bernie's itinerary that they actually looked up flight schedules. Maybe he'll have to wait until the next morning to fly back, but I think he'll manage. But then there was a problem because he won't have time for sightseeing:
7. He can't go because you can't visit Rome without spending a week there because there's so much great sightseeing to do! Yes, somebody actually said this. And also this:
8. He can't go because he's supposed to be debating Hillary at the same time! The debate is on the 14th. Presumably he will leave after the debate, at about the same time Hillary leaves for her $350,000 fundraiser in Hollywood.
That's so far. More may be forthcoming, but all this obsession with this obscure little conference is both puzzling and hilarious. All I can say is, you guys would be a lot more comfortable if you didn't let your undies get all bunched up about stuff like this.

(154,021 posts)Unless you realize that the Clinton foundation invited the Pope and they said no...and that the optics are pretty horrific. Sanders at a conference dealing with income inequality..she at a swanky event in San Fran with bunkers, and her CFO at Hong Kong raising 2700 a plate of rubber chicken.
This is a preemptive strike. And a pretty lame one

(1,089 posts)If folks who support HRC had just left it alone this would not even be a big story at all. Yet I log on here and pretty much all I see are threads about this. I don't get it - it's not a big deal either way. If I'm a supporter of HRC I don't care if he does this or not. I'd be glad he decided to leave NY during a crucial time and grind himself down with two long flights, time changes and jet lag.
Instead, folks are up in arms over this and it's become the classic mole hill to mountain situation. Now SBS is getting way, way more attention for this than he would have otherwise, as are the fundraisers being held by HRC and her campaign.
Why do people care about this so much? And please don't say it's because Bernie lied, as that's already been debunked a thousand times just on this page alone.
