Romney's internal numbers must be bad in Michigan: Romney blasts Santorum for 'dirty trick' calls

*this comes from fox news, sorry for the source. Really, it is just to so that Romney is hedging his bets and lowering expectations in MI and starting to make excuses*

Romney blasts Santorum for 'dirty trick' calls to Michigan Dems encouraging vote in GOP primary

Published February 28, 2012

Mitt Romney is calling Rick Santorum's calls to Democrats to vote in Tuesday's primary in Michigan "outrageous" and "disgusting" but Santorum says he's not doing anything besides getting people to vote in an open primary.

Romney complained about the automated calls Tuesday, as Michigan voters go to the polls in the Republican presidential primary. Arizona also votes Tuesday in a winner-take-all battle, but Michigan, with its proportional delegate award system, has added value since Romney was born in the state and his father served as governor there.

"I know why Obama doesn't want me to face him but I just think it's outrageous and a terrible dirty trick at the last hour, by the way, late in the afternoon on the day before the election, maybe hoping no one would notice, they start sending out calls to Democrats, union members telling them to go into the Republican primary and vote against Mitt Romney," he said.

Looks like Faux and Mitsy are poised to blame the Dems for defeat.
Interesting how every candidate that shows poorly has some excuse prepared the day before the event.
Are they all alcohol syndrome babies, not to disparage those poor children?

Is it a "dirty trick" for Democrats and Independents to vote for Romney?

4. I just found this: A 'New Low'? Romney Has Admitted Voting In Other Party's Primary (HAHAHA)

In a final burst of campaigning in Michigan Tuesday, embattled GOP front-runner Mitt Romney complained that rival Rick Santorum was making automated phone calls to Democrats and urging them to vote against Romney in the Republican race. (Although only declared Republicans can vote in the party primary, voters can change their affiliation to cast a ballot.)

In an appearance on Fox News, Romney said the robocalls were "outrageous and disgusting — a terrible, dirty trick" and accused Santorum of "teaming up" with President Obama's campaign. "This is a new low for his campaign and that's saying something," Romney said.

But Romney himself has acknowledged voting in the other party's primary to influence the outcome. During the Jan. 26 Republican debate, Newt Gingrich mentioned that Romney had voted for Paul Tsongas in a Democratic primary. Romney then elaborated:

ROMNEY: Just a — just a short clarification. I — I've never voted for a Democrat when there was a Republican on the ballot. And — and in my state of Massachusetts, you could register as an independent and go vote in which — either primary happens to be very interesting. And any chance I got to vote against Bill Clinton or Ted Kennedy, I took.

He just can't shoot straight.

7. Since Sunday, his numbers have been sinking like a rock. He's bleeding support

BUT...he has banked the majority of early voting ballots.

Geez, too bad the other candidates don't have the organization to push early voting...or maybe
we could sink Romney for sure.

8. Even if he manages to come out on top, the perception of his inevitability as the nominee is gone.

He won't get much mileage from this win. The CW will say he won only because he banked the early votes. If he can't win Michigan resoundingly, where else can he win? I think the process will continue up to the convention and that means more money and blood will be spilled as the teapublicans/conservatives/anti-socialists/fundamentalists keep tearing into each other.

9. It will be a long haul through the last contests for Romney

He'll probably get barely enough delegates to clinch the nomination by the end. Or if not, the unpledged superdelegates will back him if he has a plurality of pledged delegates. Or if there aren't enough superdelegates, he'll make a deal with Santorum or Paul to get their support in the months before the convention.

But he'll suffer the damage of a loooooong primary campaign and the blow to his image of struggling with Rick Santorum.

Could be really ugly for Mitt by the time the convention rolls around. If people think he's the nominee, undeservedly, I expect there's going to be a lot of unhappy conservative voters.

Santorum seems to be fairly confident, Romney seems to be trying to explain away a defeat.

And apparently a GOP internal poll showed the same results as PPP on Monday, Santorum + 5.
