New York’s closed primary - Bernie Sanders’ Achilles’ heel

There is no same-day registration in the state. Independents or members of third parties who want to vote as Democrats had to change their party registration by October 9.

And new voters – another key Sanders voting bloc – had to register by March 25, just days after the Sanders campaign deployed their first paid staffers in New York and the day before they opened their first field office there.

The switch registration and new registration date should have been the same.

and Republican party machine.

Working Family Party and Green Party have around 50,000 and 25,000 members statewide.

It would be very easy for the Democratic machine to have its people switch over en mass so that they took over the party and turned it into a subsidiary of the Democratic party.

3. "NY Sees Unprecedented Surge in New Voter Registrations" (NBC News, NY)

Apr 2016

More than 20,000 first-time voters have registered with New York state in what state officials are calling an "unprecedented surge" of voter interest ahead of the state's April 19 presidential primary.

Nearly 41,000 individuals filed online voter registration applications between March 10th and 20th. The online registration system set a record on Friday with almost 14,000 registration applications received.

Voters must register by March 25 in order to participate in the primary.

The online system also allows users to change their address. It's operated by the state's Department of Motor Vehicles, which sends registration materials to local boards of election.
