Relations between Hillary Clinton and Michelle Obama are fraught with hurt feelings and resentment, with Americas first lady looking down on the Democratic presidential frontrunner and her family, according to a newly published book.
Tensions between the two women date from the 2008 presidential campaign, when Mrs Obamas husband, Barack, defeated Mrs Clinton for the Democratic nomination and subsequently took the White House, writes author Kate Andersen Brower in First Women: The Grace and Power of Americas Modern First Ladies.
The 2008 presidential campaign left deep and lasting scars on both the Clinton and the Obama camps, and they are still shockingly fresh, says the book, which is published on Tuesday by Collins.
Mrs Obama, 52, has never forgotten how Mrs Clinton - herself a former first lady - ridiculed her husbands hope and change message in patronising tones.
The sky will open, the light will come down, celestial choirs will be singing, and everyone will know that we should do the right thing, and the world would be perfect, Mrs Clinton told a campaign rally in Ohio.

(1,166 posts)That kind of condescending put down of idealists is so easy and so cheap and says so much about the person uttering it. (Not that I think Obama's idealism ran very deep but that's another topic that's neither here nor there right now.)

(29,251 posts)now that he's under "the bright lights" of NY scrutiny. Can you imagine the outrage if Bernie said anything like that about her? He can't even state the truth about her without being called sexist.

(6,719 posts)I always liked Michelle Obama.
I used to like Hillary - until she became a Senator and kept voting against every food stamp bill that came along.

(12,754 posts)But then, there have been so many.
I can see where that mocking tone, along with the racist attacks would ruffle Michelle's feathers.
Hillary doesn't have a lot of friends -- just a gaggle of opportunists pretending to be friends.

(344 posts)However, Mrs Obama - who earned $275,000 a year as vice-president of external affairs at Chicago Universitys medical centre before her husband's election - hopes to emulate Mrs Clinton in one respect, by writing her owns books after leaving the White House.
Her aides say she looks forward to the day when she leaves a really nice prison to earn money through book deals and public speaking fees, Andersen Brower writes. Mrs Clinton received a reported $8 million advance from Simon and Schuster in the final months of her husbands administration to write about her years as first lady.

I'm sure Michelle Obama is a lot smarter than Hillary. She won't taint her record with bribes.

Making her SOS may have been part of the deal to get her to finally surrender her losing effort in 2008.

(2,125 posts)She waited like 4 or 5 days to concede after she lost the primary. She was twisting arms stomping her feet to get the most out of it she could.
Politicalboi
(15,189 posts)Her name and husband, and it was probably a pay off to make her quit the 08 campaign. If being First Lady and a Senator from NY for 4 years is qualified, then Obama should have picked someone with "real" experience. Which he did with Kerry.

(1,446 posts)But, after this election cycle, I will forevermore have a changed opinion of him. I had previously thought of him as a bit more moral and honest than the average politician, and maybe he was at one time. Now I can see that he is just another 'all talk, no substance' guy...and that annoying loud monotone will remain on my nerves for quite a while.
Point is, when you have an adversary in any type of serious conflict, it is likely that the two sides will come out with long term dislike towards each other. The real news would have been if Michelle had no hard feelings for Hillary...then she would truly be a saint!

(1,290 posts)Look, the Clintons and Obamas ain't pals. They were political rivals, and they put aside the rivalry for 8 years because they had to. Now that Obama is leaving the White House, they aren't gonna be teaming up and becoming buddies. The nasty crap that got flung back and forth in 2008 stung everybody, and that's not at all uncommon in politics.
All that being said, this book is supposed to put both Michelle and Hillary in an unflattering light because that's what the GOP wants to do.
