I don't think Sanders is going to Rome..

I don't know if he decided not to go since he was outed on not meeting the Pope or if he was dis-invited..

A Roman news agency specializing in Vatican affairs has reported that following the controversy, Sanders may call his visit off and “postpone it for a more opportune moment.” The agency, Il Sismografo, also notes that there has been “no official confirmation that Bernie Sanders” will take part in the Vatican meeting, even though Bishop Sanchez himself sent a letter on April 8 announcing Sanders’ participation.

The Vatican has insisted that Catholic institutions not offer platforms to speakers who publicly agitate for moral positions contrary to Church teaching, notably on the abortion issue. Vatican voices have also criticized the invitation as completely out of place in the midst of an election year in the United States, and only four days before the New York primary, given the Church’s stated intention to remain outside party politics."

I don't know what to make of this but I said yesterday that it was all a publicity stunt.

Discuss..

It's sleazy if you ask me.

That you don't like it doesn't make it sleaze.

I'm not surprised that there is disagreement within Catholic communities over this. Where people are, there will be disagreements. I doubt the group meeting in the Vatican would withdraw an invitation already issued, tho, so the question for the campaign now as before is probably simply will it benefit Sanders? Catholics in NY have their own, differing opinions, of course.

what you are talking about do you?

He is the Amendment King, hardly a back-bench Senator with no accomplishments.

The implication was that progressive Bernie Sanders is too far to the left to accomplish anything—all of his ideas are pie-in-the-sky. You have to be able to find the bipartisan, “warm, purple space” as Clinton said earlier this year, to get anything done. Slate's Jamelle Bouie was super-impressed by this rationale, saying Clinton has “skilled use of bureaucratic power.”

The problem with this narrative is that it is completely false. Not only has Sanders gotten a lot more things done than Clinton did in her own short legislative career, he's actually one of the most effective members of Congress, passing bills, both big and small, that have reshaped American policy on key issues like poverty, the environment and health care.

http://ilsismografo.blogspot.com/2016/04/vaticano-il-senatore-sanders-potrebbe.html

Say Sanders gets on a plane right after the debate.

11 PM NYC time is 5 AM Vatican Time.

It's a nine or ten hour flight. That puts him wheels down at Fiumicino--assuming he has a tail wind--at around 2 PM.

Let's assume he asked the STATE DEPARTMENT to send "the guy" (I used to know "the guy" very well--I wonder if he's retired already, and who the new "guy" is?) who will speak with the customs officials and work to get him expedited through customs (because, without "the guy" that's an extra hour in the terminal, damn near) and he's through the gauntlet by, say, 2:30.

Now, he's got to get in a car and drive from the airport to Rome--do they ask the carabinieri to give him a WAAAAwaaaaWAAAAwaaaWAAAAwaaaa escort? Because without one, he's gonna CRAWL there. What car does he travel in? One from the STATE Department? That would be a bit sketchy, that.

He could also take the train in, but he still has to get over to the Academy from the train station. He would need to grab a cab.

Also--I'm trying to figure out what plane he would take that leaves at 11PM? Are there any red eyes out of JFK or Newark going to Rome? Unless he has a buddy with a fast private plane, he might have trouble getting there before his 4:30 PM 'ten minute speech.'

If he doesn't end up going, I'll bet Margaret Archer will feel no small amount of grim satisfaction. She'll probably be looking for a more loyal Number 1 to serve her, too.

Sanders misspoke on the View, and the correct information has been out there before and after from numerous news sources including the Guardian.

You have proof of course for your libel here right?

You can't even get your facts straight so I know you are lying. Sachs is not a foreign policy advisor. He is an economist. He did not become Sanders team advisor until late last week which was after the invitation made the end of March.

You will also notice that most speakers are doing 10 minutes, 15 minutes, and a few at no more than 30 minutes. Having actually organized APA yearly conferences, I can assure you from experience that no one is just inserted retroactively. These things are planned out months in advance.

I am so sick of the Clinton lies. It is pathological, truly pathological.

That said, the Vatican and the papacy are now at the center of an unfortunate international diplomatic incident.

Manifestly, what the Academia does reflects for good or ill on its umbrella organization. The Academia inadvertently allowed itself to be "snookered" into extending an inappropriate invitation.

Seriously, I have to wonder whether the Hillaroids took lessons in trying to find pointless minutiae from the GOP's Benghazi investigators, worrying this like a not-too-bright dog with a dried up old bone. Either Bernie goes or he doesn't, but it's doubtful he'd have accepted for a specific speaking time if he didn't think he could make it. I know you think Bernie and his staff and his supporters are all hopelessly stupid, but I'd bet the staff are quite capable of figuring out time zones and flight schedules.

If Bernie does go he'll be talking about the idolatry of money while Hillary is busy idolizing money at George Clooney's $350K fundraising bash with the glitterati. The optics are ugly for Hillary, and you know it. But maybe she should have been invited to the Vatican conference just to present an opposing view.

But really. Just give it up. The more you whine and pick at this the more envious and spiteful you look.

Other then a change in the official program listing him as a speaker, I guess.

And then there is a link at the "Roman news agency specializing in Vatican affairs, Il Sismografo", about the invitation...

https://rootedcosmopolitan.wordpress.com/2016/04/11/the-papal-invitation-that-wasnt/

"When I sat at my computer Friday morning and saw that Bernie Sanders had been invited to the Vatican I was stunned. Though I voted for Hillary Clinton in the Illinois primary, my reaction was not the Democratic nomination. I thought “wait, this has to be wrong, there is no way the Vatican could be this dumb, it is bad for the Vatican to get embroiled in a US election.” Through the course of Friday it became obvious that in fact no office that directly represents the Pope or is an important body of the Holy See was involved in inviting Sanders to what turned out to be a conference of mostly academics. ..."
