(10,559 posts)I was answering the question about the word because I was also unfamiliar prior to this kerfuffle. It also seems odd to me since his family is mixed race. Maybe it is a younger generation/his kids use it/it isn't offensive to that generation?
This may just be "old people" trying to be "cool" and stepping into some tacky foolish stuff. My family doesn't talk that way, so I repeat - maybe a regional thing.
Or maybe we are "old" and the teens try not to confuse us?

(14,915 posts)Jews and lower income African Americans. Are we going to act like that isn't the case?
I mean, its part of the definition:
ghet·to
ˈɡedō/
noun
plural noun: ghettos
a part of a city, especially a slum area, occupied by a minority group or groups.
historical
the Jewish quarter in a city.
"the Warsaw Ghetto"
an isolated or segregated group or area.
"the relative security of the gay ghetto"

(90,347 posts)Joe the Revelator
(14,915 posts)and ghettos? I mean, thats just blatently ignoring history
Due to segregated conditions and widespread poverty, some black neighborhoods in the United States have been called "the ghetto" or "the projects." The use of this term is controversial and, depending on the context, potentially offensive. Despite mainstream Americas use of the term "ghetto" to signify a poor urban area (predominately African-Americans), those living in the area often used it to signify something positive.https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/African-American_neighborhood
The black ghettos did not always contain dilapidated houses and deteriorating projects, nor were all of its residents poverty-stricken. For many African Americans, the ghetto was "home", a place representing authentic blackness and a feeling, passion, or emotion derived from the rising above the struggle and suffering of being black in America.[25] Langston Hughes relays in the "Negro Ghetto" (1931) and "The Heart of Harlem" (1945): "The buildings in Harlem are brick and stone/And the streets are long and wide,/But Harlems much more than these alone,/Harlem is whats inside." Playwright August Wilson used the term "ghetto" in Ma Raineys Black Bottom (1984) and Fences (1987), both of which draw upon the authors experience growing up in the Hill District of Pittsburgh, first a neighborhood of early European immigrants, then a black ghetto.[26] Depending on the context and social circles, the term 'ghetto' or 'hood (short for neighborhood) can be a term of endearment for where the individual person has been brought up or lives.
Or that the same thing doesn't apply to a connection between Jews and ghettos?
In the Jewish diaspora, a Jewish quarter (also known as juiverie, Judengasse, Jewynstreet or proto-ghetto[1]) is the area of a city traditionally inhabited by Jews. Jewish quarters, like the Jewish ghettos in Europe, were often the outgrowths of segregated ghettos instituted by the surrounding Christian authorities. A Yiddish term for a Jewish quarter or neighborhood is "Di yiddishe gas" (Yiddish: די ייִדדישע גאַס ? ), or "The Jewish quarter."[2] While in Ladino, they are known as maalé yahudí, meaning "The Jewish quarter". Many European and Middle Eastern cities once had a historical Jewish quarter and some still have it.https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jewish_quarter_
Jewish quarters in Europe existed for a number of reasons. In some cases, Christian authorities wished to segregate Jews from the Christian population so that Christians would not be "contaminated" by them[citation needed] or so as to put psychological pressure on Jews to convert to Christianity. From the Jewish point of view, concentration of Jews within a limited area offered a level of protection from outside influences or mob violence. In many cases, residents had their own justice system. When political authorities designated an area where Jews were required by law to live, such areas were commonly referred to as ghettos, and were usually coupled with many other disabilities and indignities. The areas chosen usually consisted of the most undesirable areas of a city. In the 19th century, Jewish ghettos were progressively abolished, and their walls taken down, though some areas of Jewish concentration continued and continue to exist. In some cities, Jewish quarters refer to areas which historically had concentrations of Jews. For example, many maps of Spanish towns mark a "Jewish Quarter", though Spain hasn't had a significant Jewish population for over 500 years.
Seriously, how can that be considered a racist stereotype?
uponit7771

(14,915 posts)Especially knowing that Bernie focuses on economic disparity, the issue IS the segregation of low income minorities into ghettos and the surrounding issue with those ghettos, such as food deserts, crime, and the corporate prison pipeline.

(25 posts)and even I don't really think this is some big deal. A candidate was standing in close proximity to someone that made a remark in poor taste. Big deal. This is nearly as bad as some of the absurd twisting to pretend that Bernie is saying something sexist. It's really getting hard to care about a lot of this stuff.

(17,656 posts)It's the litany of bad, off-color comments that changes the perception of a candidate in the voter's mind.
Hillary has made more than enough stupid, racist comments in the last 6 months for voters to determine that she is not who she pretends to be.
Black Lives Matter, but after she gets their votes, she forgets about their issues, she forgets about their problems, and moves on to the new issue at hand.
One way to determine if a comment is offensive is to place it in a different venue.
Tell the same "joke" in front of a different audience.
Would Hillary have been so bold to make these comments on a Sunday in front of a Black congregation in a church in Georgia?
Would she have been comfortable enough to make these same comments in a rally in Mississippi?
It's just my opinion, but comments like this are what turn people off from politics, because politicians act like it's all a big joke to them.
apcalc
(4,465 posts)She'd make it at a black church. That's the point of t all. It's clear upon viewing the clip that in the skit she has no clue what "CP" might mean.
So, she inserts her understanding if it " cautious politician".
Seems fine to me , and totally non-racial on her part.
oberliner
(58,724 posts)The joke is that the de Blasio character uses an acronym that appears to mean one thing (hence the Aaron Burr character's initial reaction) but actual is something innocuous. It would be like if he said:
DeBlasio: "I got so mad at Cuomo that I called him the n-word."
Burr: "What? You called him the n-word?"
HRC: "Yeah, nincompoop. Because that is exactly what he is!"
Dumb jokes like that permeated the entire skit, as well as the other skits throughout the show.
If you want to get offended, watch de Blasio try to rap and then introduce Hillary as his "homegirl".
