Related: About this forumMonica Lewinsky reflects on Clinton affair aftermath: ‘The shame sticks to you like tar’
Lewinsky, now 42, has emerged as a passionate anti-bullying advocate almost two decades after her sex scandal with former President Bill Clinton dragged her through headlines and made her the butt of every oral sex joke.
She broke a years-long silence on their tryst and its fallout in a 2014 Vanity Fair feature.
In the Guardian interview, appropriately conducted by "So You've Been Publicly Shamed" author Jon Ronson, Lewinsky compared the act of bullying to cutting.

(30,817 posts)Instead, she was publically humiliated.
This was her fault, of course, since she set him up to reveal their affair. But she was young and in the hands of master manipulators with a passionate political agenda - to get Clinton out of office by any means possible.
Having the entire nation jeering at you has to be tremendously difficult to endure.

(30,817 posts)Young women enjoying sexual encounters is timeless.
Victimizing women involved in consensual, adult sex to suit a political meme (Bill Clinton = pervert, Lewinsky = victim) is uniquely 2016.
I did not think he was a pervert back then. I thought he was an incurable adulterer and a very bad husband. I am not going to change my opinion of the situation because Hillary is running for president.

he should have found a real one and paid her for her services.
It would have been more honest.

(30,817 posts)I think it's an ethical violation. But it's not comparable to a man having sex with a child or to any kind of rape.
I voted for Bernie, but - like Bernie, I might note - I am disgusted by Trump-like personal attacks within our Democratic party (or really, in general).

but I'm damn near certain that Bill got what he wanted.

Not me. I'm disgusted at the thought of Bill returning to the WH. It's a big reason (tho just one of many) I don't want to vote for Hillary.

(3,411 posts)Shame that I had, however grudgingly, defended Clinton when the hearings were ongoing. I knew, in that deepest heart of hearts, that the real blame belonged to the married man. The boss that dallied with a young subordinate. The man with all the power. If Democrats that did the same were truly honest, they would feel that same shame. The GOPers that instigated the whole circus - we all openly speak of their shameful part of this. But, damn! Some of us weren't much better by holding Bill to a different standard than we would have for just about any other CEO messing with a subordinate intern.
I am so pleased to see she has gained her voice, strength and self back. She is a better woman than I was at her present age.
Now. I know this will piss off certain people, but it had to be said. Let the pillorying begin. I can take it.

(27,787 posts)A Democrat, on a Democratic board, dredging up an old scandal about consensual sex between adults, as part of an endless effort to damage the Democratic front runner for President.
A great example of the far left circling all the way around to embrace the far right.
Well done!

(9,086 posts)then maybe we don't belong in the same political party,
I defended Clinton on this in the 90s and am deeply ashamed of my own behavior.
Times have changed since then.
Yes people looked the other way back then, but that won't fly now. Our society has changed for the better in this respect. There is much more understanding on issues of sexual harassment, assault, rape, and inappropriate relationships for people in positions of trust and power.
We have been through the Catholic Church scandal. We challenged rape culture on college campuses and in the military. Workplace sexual harassment is taken more seriously now.
It's a different world than when the Clintons were in the White House. Times have changed and we're never going back. Thank goodness.
President Obama has made us all proud. He has held the office with dignity. We owe him and his family a lot of respect. He would never have sex with his Whitehouse interns and that's a minimal standard of human decency that we should expect from a president.
