An Asian woman and a Jewish guy

are talking in a bar. He tells me why HRC is the best candidate, really the most liberal, smeared by the GOP, smarter than Bernie, not a flip-flopper, just changing her mind on former positions. He tells me Bernie is an opportunist.

I tell him Bernie stands for all I believe in -- social justice, a true democratic system, a populist message, defending ordinary Americans not the moneyed class.

I comment on the sad irony that I am not backing the first viable female candidate in my lifetime and he is not backing the Jewish one. He tells me Bernie has no real connection to being Jewish. I tell him HRC is betraying my progressive feminist beliefs. We listen politely to each other's arguments.

He ends by saying she has the experience to get more done and will move to the left if I trust her. I say she will never be left enough and that my friend has moved too far right since his youth. He complains his kids are backing Bernie.

I ask why it is I still manage to fight for the same issues I cared about in my youth -- why I am ready to fight for a guy like Bernie. He tells me "That's because you still believe in democracy."

There you go. Our votes cancel each other's out. But that was a nice thing he said about me. And he will still be my friend after this election is a distant memory.

I wish we could all on DU remember that under our thin skins, we do agree on some things.

Peace.

Yes, I suppose that's it, or perhaps it's that we still believe in the hope of democracy.
