I'd like to be informed voting for state supreme court justices and some court of appeals judges. Usually I read my blue book and try to decide from that very benign information. This time, I'd really like to vote out any conservatives that might be ruling in favor of the people that I don't want to have too much control in our state.
I can't seem to find anywhere online to tell me voting record or if they are considered a conservative of liberal leaning judge.
Anyone have suggestions of where I could find this information?

<candidate name> campaign contributions
That's how I figured out to vote against two judges and for one.

I keep plugging in their name and cannot find anything but biographical info but not much more than that.

(18,402 posts)Liberal (I assume) Boulder Weekly says to retain Coats (Supreme Court), though with reservations:
Justice Nathan B. Coats wasnt an easy decision. Critics say Coats sometimes seems to favor law enforcement, and he cast several votes we arent happy with like voting that CU-Boulders regents couldnt keep concealed weapons off campus and that Ward Churchill couldnt have his job back at CU. But we looked beyond particular opinions to endorse based on judges fairness and respect for the law.
The Colorado Office of Judicial Performance Evaluation says he has both those things. And its survey results say 70 percent of attorneys and 94 percent of judges who know Coats recommended he be retained. Only one judge out of 100 recommended against it.
They cant all be rock stars, but they all have to be at least adequate. So we endorse retention for Coats, who is described in the COJPE survey as fair, knowledgeable and thoughtful. Coats was appointed in 2000 by Gov. Bill Owens and won a retention vote in 2002.

(2,795 posts)I'm assuming the governor appoints state supreme court justices
I'm not sure about the court of appeals.
I called the state dem party and they sent me to a website Judicial performace or some such thing. Apparently, it's comprised of non-partisan members who review the judges, survey attorneys regarding the judges and then recommend retention or not. Looks like every one is recommended to be retained Nothing in the reviews gives me any clue about what kind of judge they really are.
There's another website called "clear the bench" but it's a conservative group looking to oust "activist judges".

(2,711 posts)the opposite of clear the bench and not be too far off!
Looks like there is more information on the Know Your Judge website than you originally told us.
In general, it is my opinion that there should be a strong prejudice toward retaining judges unless they have done something really aggregious. The judicial branch is not supposed to be subject to public opinion but rather to justice.
If you really feel that you just don't know, it's ok to leave it blank.

(2,795 posts)The Judicial performance review website does have a bit more information. I will probably go along with what the independent review suggests in this website.

(1,314 posts)Most of the judges at the Colorado Court of Appeals and the Colorado Supreme Court are liberals and were appointed by Democratic governors. There's only been one Republican governor in Colorado, Bill Owens, in nearly 40 years. The judges in Colorado cannot take campaign contributions -- like they can in Oklahoma and Texas. You'd be safe voting to retain all the judges on the ballot. I did.

(2,795 posts)I found a few that mentioned who appointed them so I felt safe retaining them. But there was the Bill Owens terms that I wasn't sure about - though he wasn't nearly as radical as the republican governors of today so even those judges wouldn't be that bad.
Thank you for the information.
How are you voting on Amend 64? I like that the tax revenue would go towards our slashed and burned public schools after Douglas Bruce screwed them with TABOR. But I'm concerned with how law enforcement will handle under the influence drivers. Do you know anything about that? There are breathalizers to measure blood alcohol but how will under the influence drivers of marijuana be screened? That's all I worry about is what kind of problems will be created with under the influence driving, accidents and how the legal system plans or is planning on handling it.
