2016 Postmortem
Related: About this forumBernie's Taking a Day Off from the Campaign.
No doubt he's talking with his campaign management and doing some strategizing. What will happen next?
Well, we won't have to wonder for long. Soon, he'll be back on the campaign trail to one degree or another. By watching how he conducts his campaign for the five states that will vote on Tuesday, we'll get a good idea about how today's meetings and decisions went. I can see three possible tracks:
1. If he wades in as usual and uses the exact same rhetoric he has been using, then we can conclude that he's going to be still going full-tilt on his quest for the nomination. That's one possibility. If that happens, we can expect a continuation of divisiveness from his campaign.
2. If he doesn't do that, cancels some appearances and conducts himself at the ones he does attend more calmly and with less intense rhetoric, then we can conclude that he has recognized that he will not be the nominee and cannot hope to be. If that is the case, it may signal that he will continue his campaign right up to the convention, but with less fervor and intensity, even though he may maintain that he still wants the nomination.
3. If, however, we see the beginnings of reconciliation and calls for unity of support against the Republicans over the next few days, we can safely conclude that an announcement of suspension will come following next Tuesday's primary events and probably an endorsement of Hillary Clinton as the inevitable nominee.
I'm not really sure which of those three tracks he'll follow. But I'll sure be watching to see if I can determine what he has decided.

(146,317 posts)Still...no...won't happen. It wouldn't get him any more votes, anyhow. It might be a fun trip, though for him and Jane.

(3,089 posts)by being a Democrat...dishonestly to me. It is not in him to be gracious as either a winner or a loser. His true nature is confrontational and mean-spirited and some of his early followers saw that in the last month and have had second thoughts and others have changed completely. He would not be able to face the rest of his like-spirited followers if he comes out at anytime endorsing Hillary. If he does, I will admit I have been wrong about him...but I don't think so.

(146,317 posts)Really? Both campaigns have been divisive, frankly. The rhetoric has been uglier than I had hoped it would be.
I'm only talking about Bernie, because he's the one taking a day to regroup. This has been an extremely divisive primary campaign season. I'm looking forward to that ending, to be quite frank.

(12,504 posts)you are being extremely mean spirited, caustic and rude post after post on this thread. No one has insulted you (until this post), yet you persist in the most rude rhetoric and insulting one liner come backs. Then on another thread, you are the one likely going to tell Hillary voters how much butt they need to kiss because you have been insulted.

(146,317 posts)I think I'm a Democrat with opinions. That's why I'm on DU. Sometimes, I post those opinions. Sometimes, you comment on them, as do others. That's what DU is all about, as I understand it. I get it that you'd rather I not post my opinions. However, I'm not really writing them for you, particularly.

I'm thinking he will pick number 1, but i could DEF be wrong.

(47,209 posts)and weighing his options. I'm not sure he alone changing his tone will be enough, it is his surrogates that are fucking it up for him.
I know he would prefer not to suspend before CA, but he also doesn't want to marginalize himself by dragging this out- especially if his surrogates continue with the ugly behavior.

(24,689 posts)Clearly he was shaken by the results from NY. He had huge mega rallies, all kinds of excitement, money flowing, massive cheering crowds.. yet he lost in a landslide. That's gotta leave a mark. I am sure he expected to do much much better. And what happened in NY is likely to repeat itself in PA and MD. There is no relief in site except perhaps Oregon but that will be way too little too late... and perhaps CA but he would need to win like 90% to make up the gap. I am sure he is coming to realize all this now. He might stick it out through Tuesday but beyond that I doubt it.

(548 posts)in the foot with the "Democratic Whore" bit. Yes, I know he did not personally say it but he had to approve of it being said. If he didn't, then he is a bigger fool than I thought and has no control over his campaign. I honestly feel deep down that Sanders is a decent guy but has gotten some horrible advice from Weaver and that other clown he has running his campaign. His advisers told him to go negative and nasty toward Hillary and that is where he blew it. Just like when Rubio went very negative. He was toast and GONE in no time.

(1,630 posts)The optics of staying in will have mixed results. On one hand, he is looking down the barrel of a massive losing streak. That is not a good look, especially if he has to rally his base for funds to do it. OTOH, if he can stay in and stay on message and promote the Dem Party, it will unify the people and make him look like a mensch. He needs to decide what he wants his legacy to be and what he wants to do in terms of his ideas going forward.

(146,317 posts)you attributed a quote to me that I did not write. That's unethical, at best. Please do not attribute things to me that I did not say. I will appreciate that very much.
I'm asking you politely not to do that. I would appreciate it if you would refrain in the future.

(15,558 posts)if you prefer I'll just say 'Thanks Captain Obvious for pointlessly stating the obvious'. I'm curious, do you compulsively read street signs to people?
MineralMan
(146,317 posts)I don't care what you say, as long as you don't quote me as saying something I did not say. You should never put anything but a direct quote inside of quotation marks. That's unethical and rude. Your alternative is also rude, but I don't care if you say that about something I've written. Doesn't bother me at all.
Of course, you can do anything you like, regardless of my request. I will call you on it, though, if you misquote me. I promise.
