2016 Postmortem
Related: About this forumAs far as I can tell, Bernie has two bad choices in front of him
He can be a statesman and walk away or he can be known as the guy who joined the party to vandalize it One involves a productive career in the Senate, the other does not.

(28,341 posts)He will not be the nominee, and will exit either way, the only question is how.
Retrograde
(10,137 posts)not exclusive to either - is to actively campaign for like-minded candidates for Senate and House seats. I'd love to see a dozen more like Bernie in the Senate, and fifty in the House!

(1,220 posts)He has brought so much to the conversation, that I hope he finds a way to remain as respected among liberals as he has been for the past 20 years.

(10,476 posts)Sanders may tie in RI and lose the other 4, let's say 45-55. In that scenario, he's have to carry the rest at 62-63%.

(70,242 posts)is past. Now that I posted this--expect the the onslaught of threads from Sanders fans.

(30,613 posts)I don't think he will do that without being absolutely certain he gave us his very best.

(30,613 posts)They would be happy to out-compete him and make their point.
Instead, they resort to "resistance is futile" statements, and GOP-style voter suppression, followed by ridiculing the disenfranchised who are catching them at their game.

(10,164 posts)If he drops out before he's eliminated, either by the delegate math or by a vote at the convention, I'll be bitterly disappointed in him.

(9,086 posts)They are posting on the internet saying Bernie should drop out.
Why do Hillary supporters insult California so much?
SFnomad
(3,473 posts)they'd move their primary to being earlier than June. And because their primary is in June, they usually don't have much of a voice. With the primary in June, they either don't have a voice or they're kingmaker. There really isn't much in between.
The did move their primary 3 elections in a row to Super Tuesday (2000, 2004 and 2008) ... don't know why they moved it back to June.

(9,086 posts)Clinton and Sanders.
SFnomad
(3,473 posts)in reality it's over. What CA will do is probably be the state that puts Secretary Clinton over the top by getting her over the majority in pledged delegates mark and when added to her Superdelegates, will clinch the nomination.

Just because you can vote for someone doesn't mean that it isn't over already.
Cheese Sandwich
(9,086 posts)They vote more for people that are still in it.
If Bernie were to win big in California it could put him over the top. He's only about 220 delegates behind right now.
There's no reason to drop out.
SFnomad
(3,473 posts)BS is 241 delegates behind ... he's further behind than Clinton EVER was back in 2008. He's been further behind for a long time ... and he's not getting much closer. And looking at the states that are coming up, he may right now be the closest he will ever be again and there just isn't enough open caucus states left for him.

(13,340 posts)If he is determined to stay on the campaign trail, he can focus fire on the GOP. Forget about Clinton. He can;t win the nomination now. But he can focus the ire of his supporters on the REAL enemy.

(42,862 posts)... at least with regard to what committees he serves on and/or chairs. He'll probably still be elected by Vermonters, but his "influence" in the Senate will be less than before. I could be wrong, but I think I'm right.

(28,079 posts)or are you just adopting the DLC/Third Way/"New" Democrats attitude that the left should just shut up and go along because we are irrelevant and unnecessary -- until an election is lost and then it's supposedly our fault, which might indicate we're not so irrelevant after all.

(1,258 posts)My first thought was that he should run independently in the GE. I do hope he stays in past California so they can have their voice heard. I don't think he would split the Democratic Party up with an independent run. But he should use this revved up populace to get some real change started. Maybe he can work on an amendment giving us guaranteed easy voting with paper ballots and publicly funded elections (no more caging, same day registration, no voter id, reasonable party affiliation deadlines, national holiday for voting, ex convicts getting to vote after a grace period, all provisional ballots counted, etc).

much nastier than Bernie!
And don't you worry about his Senate seat. Did you not
see the results of VT? BTW, he now has become even
more popular than EW.

(482 posts)what Hillary did in 2008...she stayed in until after the very last state voted (South Dakota) and then went to the convention. Bernie has said he intends to have every state have the opportunity to vote and then on to the convention. Nice twist, huh? Sometimes facts hurt...
