If someone is offering you something for free, you better read the fine print.Yeah, itll be free if the governors of America put in about $28 billion..
And that will never happen.
So basically he has no plan to get the funding of his plan.
All a big fucking lie.
link to sanders plan is here:

46.90 billion a year for the government
23 billion a year for the states.

4 year bill would look like this:

(841 posts)Today, total uition at public colleges and universites amounts to about 70 billion a year
Under the college for all act, the federal government would cover 67 % of this cost, while the
states would be responsible for the remaining 33 % of the cost.

(11,076 posts)Higher income tax revenue, a better draw from corporations in need of educated workers and the list goes on and on. The States are already in the education business and can absorb some of that. The balance is a deposit on our future. We have to face the fact that the middle class has been denuded and folks can no longer mortgage the house to put the kids through school. Something has got to give!
I can understand the frustration. My son is finished with school and we have paid off the last of the loans. Why should others get it for free? Because this is the only way we are going to keep people working and if there is no job force there is no Social Security or Medicare and when those things go we are all in a big pile of trouble! If we want to solve our problems like pollution, renewable energy and cure the crazy things that are killing us we better get the young people educated!
Actually I think the 200 billion comes from a tax on Wall Street transactions. In our best day we couldn't fight a war for69 billion.
My best to you! I hope we can all work this out!

(9,527 posts)states would have funded the ACA and medicare expansions.
We have some states that have leadership that is unfortunately immune to logic.
peace13
(11,076 posts)States who refuse will pay the cost with less opportunity for their citizens. As people move out along with industry, the states will come on board. People in states without ACA are feeling the repercussions.

(11,076 posts)Well some of them. We can only have wars, have you noticed? That is a problem.
Depaysement
(1,835 posts)Congress was told that the Iraq War would pay for itself. That was the neocon mantra, as expressed by Wolfowitz. It was a bright, shining lie and no one except the taxpayer and thousands of American soldiers paid for that lie.
Magically, hundreds of billions were found for the War on Terror. Few cared about the expense.

(13,340 posts)Typical conservative crap.... we can cut taxes AND fight an expensive war. What could go wrong?

(11,076 posts)We can quibble about the word free and obviously everyone will not go to college because some are gifted in other areas. Know that this plan will require hard work and commitment on the part of the student to be sure.
What about this bothers you?

(841 posts)No doubt about it, we need to reform the education system . But any plan set forth by the next president, bust me based on common ground and have a realistic founding.
His plan is a fairytale story.

(11,076 posts)You have to start somewhere. It is so easy to sit and shoot something down. Please tell me Hillary's plan for financing education. Fairytale story...very nice. I could say something here that will do us no good. Have a nice day!

(5,252 posts)Not only do Republicans get a shit ton of what they want for free, our idiotic government subsidizes them in one way or another. But when a true Progressive says kids shouldn't begin their adult life $20-100,000 in debt, a bunch of Democrats stand up for banksters.
Fucking never thought I'd see this at DU. Hillary supporters have a bankrupt set of values.
Sweet Freedom
(3,995 posts)I may be wrong but it doesn't sound like an all-or-nothing plan. If a state doesn't participate, they don't reap the benefits. And parents can then send their kids to whichever college they can afford in another state.
We need to do something about the cost of college because it's absolutely ridiculous. And I'm speaking as a parent who is looking at a $57,000 bill for my child's FIRST year of college. And even with academic scholarships, grants and student loans, I still have to take out a $20,000 loan just for the first year. I'm not the only parent experiencing this.
Democrats should be supporting some type of reform and we need to start somewhere. None of us is thinking that this is a guaranteed done deal. But I would much rather start with a big idea that can be negotiated and still net some positive results, instead of starting small or doing nothing.

Do you have an equal level of concern of how Clinton will achieve her "free" college goal????
Never thought I'd see the day that Democrats would be the mouthpieces, parroting teapublican "free stuff" memes.
CrowCityDem
(2,348 posts)and I've yet to hear a solid explanation as to how the states are going to fall into line, other than "because they will". Since it didn't work with Medicaid, which was even cheaper for them, there's absolutely no reason to think this would ever fly.
