University of Illinois (Urbana-Champaign) Moving Toward Layoffs in Budget Stalemate (FREE COLLEGE!)

The news this morning is grim in Illinois. The flagship school of the Illinois public university system (UIUC) is planning staff layoffs in response to the budget stalemate. Needless to say, that's step one. Because Republican governor Bruce Rauner has refused to budge on the budget until the Democratic legislature agrees to essentially eviscerate public employee unions, the public university system is getting no money from the state. Smaller schools are in deep trouble, but now we see even the mighty University of Illinois faltering.

So, what's this got to do with GD/P?

Think about what's going on here when you read Bernie Sanders' plan for tuition free college, which requires matching contributions from the states. Indeed, it requires increasing contributions from the states over time. Think about Bruce Rauner and Scott Walker signing off on Bernie's plan.

It's a fantasy.

Look at all the Medicaid expansion Opt-Outs, where federal portion was 90%.

Not to mention (1) federalism issues; (2) how do costs get determined; (3) what happens to the kids who can't get into public colleges (free=more demand than seats available)

the main reason they push it, without providing any plans to make it work around obstructionsits. It has always just been a talking point for them.
