California Superdelegate Writes Open Letter to Bernie Sanders: 'Stop the Harassing Phone Calls'
Editors Note: A debate in the democratic primary over the role of superdelegates boiled over this month when a Sen. Bernie Sanders supporter launched a website initially called "Superdelegate Hit List. The site listed the personal information of superdelegates so Sanders supporters could pressure them to switch their support from Hillary Clinton to Sanders.
Many of Sanders supporters believe that unbound delegates, better known as superdelegates and comprised of elected and party officials, should have to vote at the Democratic convention for the candidate chosen by the popular vote in their state. When the Superdelegate Hit List launched, its creator Spencer Thayer took to Twitter calling on like-minded voters to "harass" the superdelegates. Subsequently, many superdelegates complained of threatening or profanity-laced phone calls from some Sanders supporters.
In response, superdelegate Bob Mulholland, a Democratic National Convention Member elected by the California Democratic Party's Executive Board, wrote an open letter to Sen. Sanders published here.
Dear Senator Bernie Sanders,
I have heard many complaints from other unbound Delegates to our National Convention in Philadelphia (my hometown), about getting harassing emails, Facebook postings and phone calls, even to one woman at 10:30 at night, from some of your supporters demanding that we support you. We would expect this type of bullying tactics from Trump supporters. Roger Stone threatened on April 5th- he will send angry Trump supporters to the hotel rooms (Cleveland) of any delegates who betrays Donald. Do you have a similar Plan?
I have seen you on TV stating (demanding to many of your supporters) that Superdelegates should vote for the candidate that won their state. Really? Where is that in the National Delegate Plan that former Vermont Governor Howard Dean must vote for you? Congressman Raul Grijalva, a supporter of yours, who represents the 3rd district in Arizona, a state that voted 58% for Clinton and Grijalva's own district voted 61.7% for Clinton has not switched. Where is your letter to Congressman Grijalva, instructing him to shift his support to Clinton? Look in the mirror- you'll see a political hypocrite! From what I hear, Congressman Grijalva, when asked if he is shifting his support to Clinton, his response- drop dead. That is his right- he is a Congressman, thus a delegate.

(9,086 posts)Mulholland gained national attention for involvement in the Bruce Hershenson vs. Barbara Boxer campaign. Mulholland leaked a rumor that Hershenson was into porn and frequented a porn shop. Mulholland was fired by the Democratic party, but then rehired weeks after Boxer won. He is also known for his work to block a 2007 censure resolution against California Senator Dianne Feinstein for her vote to support the nomination of Judge Michael Mukasey as United States Attorney General without a vote. He is quoted as saying "It is going to be thrown out and rejected. Sometimes people can't anticipate or can't understand the big picture."[2]

Classy guy. Explain to me again why his vote should count 10,000 times more than mine?
Who elected this clown to be a superdelegate?

(9,086 posts)I wonder how many more fraudsters are currently squatting on these unelected superdelegate positions.
The Democratic Party is not living up to its name. Not even close.

(9,086 posts)But it's probably ok to call their DNC work phone number or contact them on their official political work emails.

I begin to weep for the future of the Democratic party.

(2,900 posts)he is a party official. And not wanting harassing phone calls is reasonable.

The Second Stone
(2,900 posts)on his shit list. He is quite talented at what he does, which is fight. I had not heard about the stuff with the Green Party in the early 90s, and was quite surprised to hear it here. What was described here is a felony in California. Once you get the registration cards, you can probably copy the info on them, but have a very short time to drop them in the mail or take them directly to the registrar of voters. Bob is an SOB, but I doubt that he would not have promptly turned them over.

(9,313 posts)I have no objection to open letters, just wondering. Why didn't he call Sanders or his representatives and talk to them about this directly?
And if he did try to call, he should have included that in the open letter (e.g., I resort to this open letter because you have refused to answer my calls).
This smells of a backhanded smear Sanders effort, not a legitimate call for action on Sander's part.
Also, I have never heard Sanders calling for (much less "demanding" that superdelegates should align with state outcomes. That misguided notion seemed to pop up after the WA caucuses.
I have only ever heard campaign representatives talking about the campaign itself making overtures. I've never heard any hint that they are encouraging loose cannon supporters to get in the act.

(3,431 posts)If voting Dems tell their representatives that s/he will lose
their votes, that is their right.
This guy, as I understand it, is not even elected by voters,
so I don't understand why anyone would bother him.

B. That these calls are from actual, verified Sanders supporters?

(30,249 posts)It's not going to work and haranguing them only will serve to make them more entrenched in their desire to not switch to Sanders. Besides, who in their right mind really thinks that super delegates are going to switch from Hillary to the candidate with less pledged delegates an less actual votes????
