2016 Postmortem
Related: About this forumThe Democratic primary is over. It’s time to take on the Republicans.
The New York primary is over, and for all intents and purposes, so is the Democratic primary. Hillary Clinton is going to be the nominee.
Bernie Sanders may or may not have accepted that fact, but its time for Democrats to move on either way. What Bernie should or shouldnt do is no longer relevant to winning the Presidency. Democrats, led by the Clinton campaign, need to pivot to winning in November.
It starts with the White House and ends with state legislative seats across the country. Regaining a majority in the Senate is on the table, as is gaining more seats in the House. We win by making every Republican running for office own Donald Trump and Ted Cruz as the leaders of their party. Hold them accountable for everything Cruz and Trump say from now until November.
We win by reminding voters constantly that the GOP, led by Trump and/or Cruz, stands only for obstruction. To the point where they wont even meet with President Obamas supreme court nominee, much less do their constitutional duty of vetting him.

(30,613 posts)If they actually believed in their candidate, they would not be so obviously afraid that Bernie is going to win.
If we really want to take on the Republicans, we need the strongest possible candidate, and the polls are unanimous on who is the strongest candidate to fight any likely GOP nominee.

(9,385 posts)(and/or Cruz, Kasich) anytime she wants. I think she should go right ahead and do that.
And no one can stop Bernie from continuing to campaign until the convention chooses a nominee. And he's free to campaign any way he wants too.
I'm surprised it has to be said so many times.

(587 posts)but to continue his campaign past the point of being able to realistically win signifies that he doesn't care about the party, that he's init for his own selfish ends and ego, or that he's just grifting money from naive voters and believing his lies that he has a path forward.
He needs to suspend his campaign, endorse Hillary and get with the program.
He has a lot of time and money invested in this coming Tuesday's races, but he's going to lose - and badly. Next week is the appropriate time to hang it up and face the music.

He's in it to the end, and so are his supporter-donors. Clearly, that isn't going to change.
The pushy demands without anything to back them up are kind of funny.

(9,385 posts)Your post nailed it, but no, I don't think you'll get an answer. I don't think they have one because they aren't making much sense. The drama is supposed to make up for the lack of it, I think. Or it's just garden-variety flame bait.
We're supposed to be upset about it, presumably. And waste our time refuting their talking points, instead of just saying, "that's a spun-up talking point". Lol!
But I'll give it this... the replies by Sanders people are very entertaining!

(9,313 posts)The feeling with these types of OPs is familiar. Like when my little niece starts getting worked up over something she can't have. With her, I just wait for the wail to start so I can say "you'll be ok." (and she usually is in short order.)
There are all these posts about "stages of grief" for Sanders supporters. I kinda wonder if the Hillary people are going through their own process. We're seeing denial that Bernie didn't go back to Vermont and stay there. Bargaining...
Waiting For Everyman
(9,385 posts)(For those who don't know -- it's one of the 3 large buttons under the bottom left corner of any OP. Click it, back arrow to the GDP page, refresh, and poof! it's gone. On the GDP page there's a tiny box at the end of each thread title... clicking that will trash the thread too.)
There are very few, if any, Clinton threads posted in GDP which are informative, or actually about something of interest. Most of them are just psychologically manipulative in some way. Like those "stages of grief" threads, I put all of them straight in the can. The point was simply to annoy us. Sometimes I read them, sometimes the title is enough to know what it is.
In any match up or contest, or election, a lot of it is psyching the other side out. If they can con us into defeating ourselves, so much the easier for them.
But back in the day I played a lot of sports and I won most of the time, and I always felt that... I'm going to play hard to win, but if I lose, I'm going to make it as hard as I possibly can for the other side. I'm going to make it an ordeal to defeat me. That's how this should be too.
We won't be forfeiting, and we won't be psyching ourselves out. That's making it way too easy, they'll have to fight us for every delegate.

(587 posts)Every single candidate is in it to the end - they PROMISE. Right up until they drop out. Sanders is no different.
He's already making overtones about reassessing the race. Lots of high placed people are calling for him to reevaluate and step aside. Many of his own supporters are saying such too.
There is a faint glimmer of naive hope that somehow NY was a fluke and on Tuesday he can pull back. On Tuesday, his situation is going to go from bad to worse. And at that point, EVERYONE will be talking about how it's over. The only question will be what bounds does his ego know?
As the saying goes... "A man's got to know when he's beaten".
Waiting For Everyman
(9,385 posts)How do I know that? Because Sanders and his surrogates told us what to expect. And that is exactly how it has gone... including NY, including what's ahead. This is not news.
What other people outside his campaign want is not his concern.

(9,313 posts)Would be a big mistake.
Even if the probability of Sanders getting a majority of the pledged delegates were 0 (it is not), he should still stay in and take as many delegates as he can amass to the convention.
More business goes on at the convention than nominating. Decisions on rules. Decisions on process. Decisions on platform. Behind the scenes commitments. The more Sanders delegates, the more likely we can change the processes and platform for the better. The more Sanders delegates, the more influence.
If Hillary is the nominee and she wants unity, she and the party need to take bolder stances. At the convention, Sanders and his delegates can help make that happen.
And Hillary's candidacy will be better for it.

(17,665 posts)You guys do you. Run your own race. No need to interpret Bernies campaign for anybody. He made a commitment to stay in till the end and he is keeping his agreement.
Surely you all have some leaflets to deliver or mailings to stuff.

(42,862 posts)That's just how primaries work. It sucks to live in a late voting state when the actual nominee becomes clear early on.

To the convention we go!

(9,313 posts)1. The people who are committed to getting as many Sander's delegates to the convention as possible, win or lose, are going to continue to work to do that, so you can't be talking to them.
2. The people in the remaining states who are committed to voting for Sanders to show support for the New, New Deal this country so desperately needs are going to do that, so you can't be talking to them. They aren't "moving on" 'til they've voted for Bernie and encouraged others to do the same.
3. Hillary supporters are already "on board" with you, so you can't be talking to them.
4. Sander's supporters who don't care about sending more Sander's delegates to the convention to give him more leverage are already "moving on," so you can't be talking to them. They are already "on board" too.
So, Who Do You Think You Are You Talking To?

(23,156 posts)The primary is not over.
Remind me again of how Hillary bowed out gracefully in 2008 as soon as it was obvious to the most casual observer that she wouldn't be wining the nomination? What? She didn't bow out until the Convention? Mon Dieu! So why should Bernie depart now?

(482 posts)concede this race at any time. That way a real Democratic Progressive can take on Trump like you suggest. She's welcome to stay in until the convention if she wants to... What is it with some Hillary supporters, surely you can understand english. He's not leaving. I know it hurts real bad, but you and your group are going to see and hear about Bernie ALL the way to the convention floor. So sit back, relax, and enjoy the show.

Wait?
You mean we didn't have an election yet?
We didn't have a Democratic convention yet or adopt a platform?
These bullshit op-eds do nothing but piss Bernie supporters off and make us work harder.

Cry in your beer all you want that Hillary hasn't sealed the deal. I think quite a few people are shocked at how determined many Americans are at getting fair voting back, a decent economy for everybody back, and the lengths we will go to in pursuit of fairness.

(45,319 posts)And I know you Clinton Campers were going to do this when you started claiming Bernie was discounting the South, your cohort ALWAYS claims others are guilty of what they are doing. Bill and Hillary have public marriage problems? Blame the gay people and Defend Marriage against them, not against adulterous straights, no. What they do, they attack others for doing.
So I'm really sick of that garbage. It was tired and old in 1996. Voter suppression, bigotry, love of Reagan. Get it off the stage. Self centered centrists will be the death of this country.

(47,803 posts)The GOP is just one of the problems. The excessive influence of the wealthy and powerful is an issue. The stifiling of the middle and poorer classes and the obscene concentration of wealth due to corporate and Wall St. Greed are issues. The lack of a clear and universal system to ensure universal access to affordable healthcare is an issue.....
