2016 Postmortem
Related: About this forum(Real) Bernie supporters, do these fake conversion/ready for unity stories sway you toward Hillary?
Didn't think so. Maybe Hilteam believes this stuff is effective because they're so enthralled with popular opinion. Silly propaganda IMO.

(319 posts)Actually pushing me further from her - to me they're proof that she is completely ignorant of my point of view. And this tactic is going to drive independents so far out of her reach she's not going to be able to get our votes. Independents chose to not be affiliated with a party because we like to make up our own minds and trying to manipulate us into assimilation is only going to piss us off

(142 posts)I won't vote for a corporate Republican, regardless of what letter she chooses to put next to her name.
I have three teenage sons, so there's no way I'll be voting for the MOST interventionist candidate, the one most likely to get us into the next big war. As much as I loathe him, even Trump would be less interventionist than Hillary on the world stage.
So, I'll continue to send Bernie more small donations, and if he is denied the nomination, well I'll then cast my vote for a wonderful Progressive woman ... Dr. Jill Stein. It's not my fault that the powers-that-be may choose to nominate one of the most corrupt, dishonest politicians in my lifetime (especially if that decision is ultimately made by the Superdelgates). I'll continue, as I always have, to vote for the BEST candidate on the ballot. That person must be Sen. Sanders!

(2,586 posts)will drive MANY Bernie supporters away from supporting Hillary (and then if she loses, the Left will get blamed AGAIN like in 2000).
In SPITE OF this nastiness (which characterized the Hillary camp in the 07-08 cycle much more than those of us supporting Barack Obama) I will support the Democratic nominee EVEN IF she is it. I will also -- should she be the nominee -- seek to persuade other Bernie supporters AT LEAST IN SWING STATES IF THE ELECTION IS AT ALL COMPETITIVE (many expect that it won't be but I am not so confident) to vote to keep the GOP out. Actually, if someone in MA, where I live, wants to vote for Jill Stein, I am not going to sweat it. But in a competitive election, voters from the MANY states that might be in play should really support the nominee. Hillary is no worse than her husband, or Kerry was. Despite much protestation at the time, I always had a higher opinion of Gore than most other neoliberals other than Obama (who turned out to be one, if more progressive than many).
Does my willingness (as also expressed by Bernie himself, at least at various points) to support the Democratic nominee even if he doesn't get the nomination make me a "fake" Bernie supporter? Some would say yes. Others might come up with special arguments. But through the very last day of the primary season, I see NO reason for Bernie to pull back or silence his voice -- he was EXCELLENT eg in the NY debate in his strong stance on climate, and his bluntly honest characterization of the 'superpredator' label as used (as really used). That is the Bernie I voted for and if he doesn't win the nomination and then cream Trump, but at least this time around relatively progressive Democrats are stuck once again voting for a neoliberal to stop the GOP, I am prepared to do that, without false enthusiasm but without regret. And the stronger Bernie is at the Convention, the better it will be for the longer term struggle both within and beyond the Democratic Party of progressives against neoliberalism. 2016 will NOT be the end of this struggle....
And no I have to doubt people like Tom Hayden who claim to be experiencing Saul/Paul-on-the-road-to-Damascus epiphanies for Hillary. I will never be "converted" but if necessary, for the time being, am willing to compromise.
Should Bernie run as a third party candidate if Hillary is nominated, as some urge? I don't think he is willing to do that and I don't think he should, as it would only weaken his powerful hand to build progressive politics inside AND outside the Democratic Party no matter who gets elected

(24,010 posts)2. This bullshit about "unity" is just that--bullshit!--to brainwash voters into thinking it's over.
3. I don't like tactics that try to fuck with peoples' minds--it's dishonorable.
4. I don't like any of the dirty tricks, lies and election rigging that the Clinton campaign and the DNC have engaged in, trying to shove this candidate, Clinton, down our throats.
5. I don't like the Corrupt Media which has been shilling for Clinton from day one, with the candidate's complicity on false delegate numbers, outright lies and other crapola (including feeding a falsely captioned photo of Bernie Sanders civil rights activism to Time magazine, which had to print a retraction!) Unforgivable crapola!
6. I don't like the Democratic Party leadership, which, as far as I can see, are a bunch of bought-and-paid for minions--bought and paid for by this candidate with money from the Saudi arms deal she arranged as Sec of State, and arms deals with other woman-hating regimes, after they donated millions to her Clinton Foundation slush fund.
7. I don't like having a candidate under investigation by the FBI for national security malfeasance, and possible crimes.
8. I don't like a candidate who supported the fascist coup in Honduras, where women activists are being murdered for opposing the coup and trying to protect Mother Earth, and many people are suffering brutality and loss of liberty.
9. I don't like a candidate who gloats and laughs over the bayonet rape and murder of her opponent, as she did about Libya's Gaddaffi ("We came, we saw, he died! ha-ha-ha!" on vid), showing no human decency nor any compassion for the millions of destroyed lives in the now chaotic country, including the most vulnerable victims of war--women, children, the elderly and the sick.
If the differences between Clinton and Sanders were only about policy, unity could perhaps be achieved over the platform and personal commitments regarding enacting it, over future procedures of the party and election integrity in general, and about appointments such as Treasury Secretary and DNC chair.
But there are more fundamental differences between these two candidates and campaigns--on character, judgment and world view, that may impossible to reconcile.
The Clinton Foundation's acceptance of millions of dollars from war profiteers and dictatorial regimes, and then turning around and using these tainted slush funds to buy the political loyalty of non-profit groups (such as Dolores Huerta/United Farm Workers), and the Clinton campaign's list of bankster, for profit-prison, military contractor, big Pharma, Big Oil donors--these things are show-stoppers. They are so corrupt that supporting the candidate who is funded by them is equivalent to saying "yes" to Corporate/War Profiteer rule.
Politics does require compromise, even between bitterly opposed sides, but this kind of compromise will be too much for many Sanders supporters. Some Democratic Sanders supporters may agree to unity. Many Democrats and, above all, most independents, will flee. Where will they flee to? There is already talk of a write-in campaign for Sanders. There is already talk of a third party. There is talk of voting for Jill Stein of the Greens and/or joining the Greens. There is talk of throwing all energies into electing Bernie Democrats for lower offices, and of creating a movement for election integrity and reform perhaps with the ability to generate funds for Bernie candidates at all levels.
I think the feeling of many Sanders supporters is that Hillary Clinton is a terrible candidate with such high negative numbers on trustworthiness and likeability and so much "baggage", that she will lose the GE, and she is, further, so bad on all the issues that we care about, why devote our energy and funds to such a candidate? If she manages to win, we expect betrayal.
Anyway, the current spate of Hillarybots running around DU today posting OP after OP abusing Sanders supporters, tells us: a) This primary is NOT over, and b) They don't want "unity."
