2016 Postmortem
Related: About this forumHow many here witheld their vote from Barack Obama in Nov 2012 to punish him
for supporting free trade agreements, not prosecuting the banksters, etc.?
After all, making Romney president would have taught Obama a good lesson, no?

(3,920 posts)NAFTA was old news and the worst parts of TPP and TTIP had not yet been made public -- probably not even negotiated.
But Hillary seems to be coming round. On some things, it is good to flip.
In answer to your question, I have voted straight Democratic since 1982. I still regret voting 3d party in 1980, though Reagan would have won even if I had voted for Carter.

(12,685 posts)speaking and consulting fees (from countries, people, and corporations that had business with our government) there is NO WAY I would have voted for Obama.
It seems he was smart enough to figure out that type of behavior would not go over well with the voting public.

(72,790 posts)But it wasn't so much to punish Obama. Punish is the wrong word in my case.
I live in CT, Obama was going to win my state with or without my vote, so I thought it was low risk to vote for someone else. I voted all DEMs downticket.
I think the system and process is flawed, has been for a long time. We go into an election basically knowing how each state will vote. You can count on CT going blue, and Kentucky going red for prez, and etc, etc.

The inertia of American Empire means that our American Spring has been coming on slowly, and since Sanders announced his candidacy the bar has been raised. The crises facing us have become more urgent, with smaller margins of error. I am now much less sanguine about a nominee who romises to follower many of the failed policies of the past. I would not muster the same enthusiasm for Clinton that I did for Obama, barring whatever turnaround the progressive movement can inspire in her.
I hope I never become an or-buster, however. I hope everyone here will vote against the neocons, even if it means settling for a neoliberal.

Edited to add: I do not personally accept the equating of Hillary to Obama, it's apples and oranges. Plus, some of my reasons for voting for him are some of the same reasons I voted for Bernie.
Furthermore - I trust Obama's character and leadership, even when he's wrong on policy. I cannot say the same for her.
