A New Policy Disagreement Between Clinton and Sanders: Soda Taxes

While not the biggest issue the two candidates have tussled over, it is one that may reverberate across the country in coming years as more cities and states use the tax to raise revenue or improve citizens’ health.

This week, Mrs. Clinton became the first presidential candidate to explicitly endorse a tax on sugary drinks. At a Philadelphia event Wednesday, she said a proposal there to use a soda tax to fund universal prekindergarten was a good idea.

“It starts early with working with families, working with kids, building up community resources,” Mrs. Clinton said, according to a CNN report. “I’m very supportive of the mayor’s proposal to tax soda to get universal preschool for kids. I mean, we need universal preschool. And if that’s a way to do it, that’s how we should do it.”

what are you going to do when soda tax revenue goes down? Shut down the schools? Send half the kids home? It needs to be something more lasting and substantial than that. Soda consumption is already going way down.

We have no money for these programs... unless we can get it from the poorest people.

I can't believe people give such young children sodas filled with caffeine. It is like have 2 or 3 cups of coffee. I gave up soda because the caffeine was so strong. Taxing it might be a good idea.

we never gave a kid in the 'olden' days. Maybe that is why so many kids are labeled hyperactive these days.

Disagrrements on a soda tax are not the fire breathing rhetoric
of "She's not qualified" "They're all corrupt"

This is a nice safe disagreement.

Way to go Bernie.
Time to start nudging your reasonable supporters toward Hillary.

Here's what sin taxes have done to the tax burden in the states. Let's pick mine;

See that tiny little bump on the far right? Clinton and her donors occupy that realm - the 5.4% tax bracket. The takers.

Fuck sales taxes. Fuck sin taxes. Fuck regressive taxes. Go Bernie.

helped decrease cigarette consumption, particularly among the very young and the poor. I think the savings would be more in reduced healthcare costs and less in the actual money collected. Why is this a bad thing?

On the preschool issue. How about we do it the old fashioned way and tax the millionaires and billionaires who can afford it? Why tax soda when there are so many other logical ways of achieving universal pre-k.
