2016 Postmortem
Related: About this forumIf my early voting experience here in FL is any indication
Turnout will be even greater than 2008. I was at the polls with my kids at 630 for the 7am opening and line was already around corner. By time doors opened it was around TWO corners and by time I left(740am) it was almost a complete circle around the library.
I'm in Hollywood and this is definitely an Obama neighborhood but to see so many people lined up so early on the FIRST day is a great sign. Anecdotal chatter in line was that this was a very important election and many were holding spots in line for their friends and family telling them to come out ASAP.
Will get some pics up soon. My kids loved the voting experience and I let them fill in some ballot circles and slide the paper into the reading machine. Had poll workers compliment me on having them go thru it so young(6 year old twins)

Remind people to vote NO on all amendments and YES on retaining the Supreme Ct justices.

(1,399 posts)My wife is a palm beach county school teacher and she called her union. And they told her to tell people to vote no on all amendments except #9. They said yes on 9. I do not know what that is about. But my wife is usually correct.

CONSTITUTIONAL AMENDMENT
ARTICLE VII, SECTION 6
ARTICLE XII, SECTION 32
HOMESTEAD PROPERTY TAX EXEMPTION FOR SURVIVING SPOUSE OF MILITARY VETERAN OR FIRST RESPONDER.Proposing an amendment to the State Constitution to authorize the Legislature to provide by general law ad valorem homestead property tax relief to the surviving spouse of a military veteran who died from service- connected causes while on active duty or to the surviving spouse of a first responder who died in the line of duty. The amendment authorizes the Legislature to totally exempt or partially exempt such surviving spouse's homestead property from ad valorem taxation. The amendment defines a first responder as a law enforcement officer, a correctional officer, a firefighter, an emergency medical technician, or a paramedic. This amendment shall take effect January 1, 2013

(827 posts)It'll suck much needed funds outta local governments which need it the most.
They're using the surviving spouse angle to drum up support but it's a bad amendment and if they really wanted to they could pass this in the legislature.
Lochloosa
(16,067 posts)It follows the spouse not the house.
Portability
The exemption applies for as long as the spouse holds the title to the homestead, is a permanent resident of the homestead, and does not remarry. If the property is sold, the surviving spouse can transfer the exemption to a new primary residence.

(2,091 posts)I have been studying the amendments. Even though I have a graduate degree, I found the wording on some of the amendments to be soooo difficult to understand. Last night I googled, hoping to find explanations of the amendments in simple terms. I found a couple of great sites that broke the wording down in layman's terms, so with my sample ballot, I marked my potential vote. I will go over this one more time before I actually vote for real. I will early vote next week because I didn't feel comfortable that I had the knowledge to make the right decisions today. Of course, on the reverse side of the ballot, I have NO PROBLEM. I will vote Dem all down the ballot. On the parts with only a Rep running, that will be left blank.
This is one of the sites I used: http://flcourier.com/2012/10/25/2012-proposed-amendments-to-floridas-constitution/
Good luck to all of us. This election is so important and we want our EV to go to our President, Barack Obama!

(2,091 posts)I can't imagine how anyone can actually vote on an amendment without information. I wonder how many people will not even read the ballot until they are in the voting booth. One of the sites I found was from a newspaper in Tampa saying the amendments were written by lawyers and was in legalese, so naturally most people won't understand them. Also, the League of Women Voters suggested to vote NO on all amendments. I'm not ready to do that until I understand what the amendment actually mean and then I'll vote.

GETTINGTIRED
(330 posts)Attempt to hold me down, silence my voice, suppress my vote and I'll come out 3 times harder, stronger and faster, cause I can definitely SHOW YOU better than I can tell you...........that's what you're seeing at the polls.....

(7,515 posts)I live in Palm Beach County and will be working the polls that day...I've been assigned to my own precinct so I'll wait and reduce the early voting lines by 1. How many pages made up your ballot? Ours is 3 double sided or 6 pages long. I'm wondering just how long it will take people to get through the line on election day....We have to be at our assigned precincts by 6 am and can't leave until every person who was in line by 7 pm gets the chance to vote and then we have to take down everything...machines, voting tables, count the ballots and make sure they match the totals in the scanners etc. I'm expecting a very, very long day.

(14,337 posts)Too late for early voting, but I decided NOT to send in my Absentee Ballot. I didn't like my signature on the outside of an envelop. What if it got wet and the ink smeared? Also, don't trust it getting there and go missing.
I can practically fall out of my house and be at the polls. I will bring my ballot with me, plus TWO photo ID, to the polls when I go as soon as they open.
Very RED Naples, but I live in an area that is pretty mixed.
For what it's worth, I am in NY and going to get hit with that hurricane. Ain't that a bitch? Leave Florida and have a hurricane in the NE?

(8 posts)Voted early in west palm beach this morning and the lot was full. No romney stickers, many obama stickers/signs.
Took an hour to vote. In the future they should limit amendments and word counts so the ballot would be shorter.

(5,810 posts)We're voting absentee, which we understand has some risk. However, from everything I have read about this, there is RISK in every method we use. From vote flipping, to voter suppression, to confusing and lengthy ballots.....we have many obstacles to overcome in this country to cast our ballots securely and accurately.
If there is one issue that we should address before the next election, it should be in assuring us that our electoral system is fair and accurate. It has been hanging out there waving in our faces like a red flag for far too long. I know many, many people have spent countless hours to try to fix what is wrong with our system and yet we still keep hearing about the corruption in our method of voting. We should all be resolved (no matter which party) that our electoral system be purged of its obvious flaws and potential for stealing an election.
Even knowing our system has serious problems, I still plan to vote later today. It is not a guarantee that my vote will be counted properly and for that I am seriously disturbed and angry. However, one thing I know for sure. If I DO NOT VOTE, then it is assured my vote won't get counted. So, in spite of all the things wrong with our system, I will vote and you should, too!

(8 posts)Last election I lived in Chicago and it took me 10mins to early vote. This morning my mom, wife, and I all stood in a line for more than an hour in Marion County Florida to vote for President Obama. There were several seniors, so I am not sure who they were voting for, but the seniors infront of me had their registration confirmation paper in their hand and they were register dems. I also admit I peeked at the guy who was voting next to me and he also voted for Obama. So four confirmed votes for Obama in Florida!!
It would be funny if Obama wins Florida by 4 votes.

(1,716 posts)They said they had called around to the four other locations in the county and they were all slammed all day long. Only took about an hour.
Wanted to have a smoke afterwards, even though I haven't thought about smoking in years. Felt real good!

Why the mad rush to vote at 7am on day 1 and wait hours?

You didn't fill out the ballot yourself. The Republicans are right there is rampant voter fraud.
