Poblano is the pseudonym of Nate Silver, the sabermetrician and political psephologist who has done more to influence the 2012 presidential election than other political analysts and commentator. Silver is behind The New York Times' FiveThirtyEight blog, which conducts a complex statistical analysis of the state of the race, and boils it down to daily estimate of the two candidates chances in the form of a mathematical percentage. Where most political commentators output is the product of briefings, gossip and personal perception, Silver deals in cold, hard facts. And at the moment, Silvers facts are being fired like bullets into the heart of the Romney campaign.
Over the past week Romney has had a clear strategy; give the impression of momentum. Demonstrate the post-debate surge is continuing. Get people talking about how the race is his to lose.
This strategy has taken various forms. In the wake of the final presidential debate which Obama won by a country mile an army of Romney strategists were dispatched to spread the word that the debate didnt matter, it was all too late, and Romneys momentum was carrying him to victory. President Obama regained some lost ground, said CNN contributor William Bennett, a former official in the George H W Bush administration, but the damage had already been done. Mitt Romney now carries the momentum into the home stretch.

And then, slap bang in the middle of all this surging and sprinting, up pops that geeky killjoy Silver. In polls, Romneys momentum seems to have stopped, he announced in a blog yesterday. Coolly and calmly, Silver set about dismantling the Romney bandwagon. According to his model's Nowcast the chance of either candidate prevailing if the election was held on that particular day the trend was slightly favourable to Obama . . . .

We need to counter right wing bull-shit with some shit of our own.
Mr Silver seems to be doing a fine job since those in the media are having fits over his reports.
The very idea of anyone questioning their assertions (their legitimacy) is too much for them to stand.
Maybe their viewing audiences will notice, when they watch the nightly news, that the pundits have no clothes.

(4,154 posts)Much gnashing of teeth with claims that Silver is lying. . . What frightens me are the idiots there are in this country. I don't fear an Obama loss, as I feel strongly he'll win, although I'm READY for the suspense to be OVER.

(5,810 posts)that he for one second would post information that is bogus...on purpose? This man's business and life are dependent on being accurate. And last time around, as I recall, he was one of the whiz kids who told us all along that Obama was gonna win it. Any bets that he has suddenly gone stupid?
My money is on Nate (and Sam Wang over at the Princeton Consortium----another one of the nerdy guys who VERY accurately predicted the outcome last time.....within ONE POINT of the actual EC Vote) Whenever I get down in the mouth listening to anyone on the boob tube tell me lies and inaccuracies, I go to one of the two guys I trust and they NEVER let me down. I always come away smiling and I sleep better that night. Try it if you're having angst or sleepless nights over this. It's better than a night cap or a sleeping pill.
