I voted early in Florida - Big Turnout!

Hi!

Though my disability has been causing me a lot of pain lately, I really felt the obligation to get out and vote, and it seemed a now or never thing as far as good days go. Today was the first day of early voting here in FL, so I grabbed my cane and got my mom to take me.

Lemme tell you: the turnout is tremendous here. Port Saint Lucie, precinct 26. Line out the door, the inside is packed. A poll worker said it had been nonstop all day, and it was still packed when I was leaving. They were very attentive and accommodating, too. The moment they saw my cane, they took me up to vote; I would not have been able to stand long enough to make it through the line.

Interesting conversation I heard behind me while awaiting my ballot: one lady in line said she was relieved that we still use paper ballots here, and a bunch agreed. Someone else said she heard that Tagg Romney owns a bunch of the voting machines.

So, here's hoping for good results! I may pay for going later in pain, but I'm glad I went, and it seems like voter turnout is anything but unenthusiastic.

I can't say that I know who everyone was voting for, but there sure were a lot of 'em. Lots of young people, too.

It was my first time voting for president. I was again consumed by my illness back in '08 and didn't get to go, but I pushed it this time.

Young people have the most at stake, so I'm glad to see lots of 'em at the polls! It may hurt tomorrow but you will never regret doing your utmost for President Obama. You did great!

And thank you, thank you, thank you so much.

I like seeing my vote go through personally, rather than trusting that it'll reach someone and be counted in a timely fashion. Maybe paranoia on my part, I dunno.

You would be risking a different kind of pain from not voting. If it happens anyway you'd at least know you did all you could to stop it.

and your vote. Let me add that in North Carolina, we offer "curbside" voting for those too infirm to stand in line. If you take a person needing curbside voting just inform a poll worker and they'll bring the ballot to your car.

My wife is totally and permanently disabled, too. We made a point of voting on the first day of early voting where we live, too. There weren't lines or anything, but then we live in deep red territory, so that is okay. Our financial contributions are way, way down this year on account of financial reversals. But we feel one of the best ways we (or anyone) can help Democrats financially is to vote as early as possible. That way Democrats don't waste a phone call or a penny of postage getting us out to vote, and our own time on election day is freeer (sp?) for gotv work. And going in to vote first thing will give us an ample opportunity to deal with it if there is a problem such as one of our names having been purged from the voter rolls or some other shenanigans (our Secretary of State is Kris Kobach, so skullduggery is likely).

I can't stand for more than five minutes without sitting down, so I did the smart thing and went out and bought a folding stool to take with me on November 6th. I highly recommend that to anyone who thinks they may be uncomfortable standing in line for a long time. I'd hate for people to just give up and walk away because their feet hurt or back aches.

I just remember that scene from Carrie where the bitchy popular girls took all the votes for Homecoming Queen and trashed them and replaced them with fixed ballots.

It's so much easier to hide paper ballots than it is to fix a line of code in a computer to rig the process.

Welcome to DU though. Hopefully some other posters with more time will come along and educate you a bit on how electronic voting has really changed the election process.
