Why Sanders should be raking the Obama administration over the coals.The Vermont Senator has been too soft of Barack Obama, who has let Wall Street utterly off the hook
Time is running out for Senator Bernie Sanders to tell the truth about the last several years of the Obama administration that has run a protection racket for the Wall Street predators that cratered the economy, even as their pillage of Main Street continues unabated. By avoiding this awful truth, perhaps in fear of alienating African-Americans voters, Sanders is squandering a once-in-a-life opportunity hes worked so hard for to speak truth to power.
<snip>
It has been widely reported that the biggest players in the 2007-08 financial crisis escaped criminal prosecution on President Obamas watch. Even though their fraudulent behavior collapsed Americas housing market and sucked the wealth out of the nations pension nest egg, these titans of finance have during Obamas presidency gone on to prosper and preside over institutions that are even larger today than they were before the Great Recession.
Thanks to a New York Times report earlier this month, we know that the latest $5.1 billion settlement between the Department of Justice and Goldman Sachs is an even sweeter deal than all the others that the Obama administration has been busy signing off on. Buried in fine print, the Times reports, were government incentives and tax credits that mean the Wall Street giant will have to pay only a fraction of what the DOJ press release says it will.
<snip>
The settlements are as fraudulent as the conduct they purport to punish. No doubt, we can expect the government lawyers that cut these Wall Street deals to follow the same path as former Attorney General Eric Holder, who upon leaving his post at the DOJ proceeded right back into the rarefied air of his corporate law firm Covington & Burling, where he worked before his latest stint of public service.

(39,376 posts)Plus, it's a rabbit hole. When the Daily News asked Bernie what crimes were committed, he didn't have an answer. He could have said fraud, but then he'd have to go into excruciating detail and sound like he was hoping to be appointed AG not running for President.

(3,089 posts)Armchair quarterbacking is easy. Obama did what he thought was best for the country. Get over it. The economy is improving and has been under Obama. A few criminals didn't go to jail...YET. Criminals go free every day. Find something else to bitch about.

(10,650 posts)We've got a huge justice department which would have had plenty of time and resources to bring corporate criminals to justice. Obama's time wouldn't have been an issue at all. Your excuse is, frankly, silly.

(10,650 posts)That might be harsh, but letting them slide was clearly a monumental error. Saying that is not going to help anyone win a Democratic primary. Bernie has done the right thing. For the same reason, he has not gone after Hillary on her emails (both content and private server).

(146,318 posts)I think Bernie should start dissing President Obama today, before the next round of primaries. He should go on attack against the policies and history of Obama's presidency. That would certainly do the trick. It would accelerate his decline and let us focus more on supporting the candidate who will be the nominee.
Attacking a popular sitting President is always a terrific idea for a candidate who is behind. Yup!
