Salon: Bernie Sanders surrogate finds sneaky way to inject Monica Lewinsky into 2016 debate

BY SOPHIA TESFAYE

Bernie Sanders has repeatedly said he is committed to battling Hillary Clinton for the Democratic presidential nomination to the very end, insisting that all future attacks will be policy based, but now one of his most active Hollywood supporters is invoking Monica Lewinsky to accuse Clinton of bullying the Sanders campaign.

“We are literally under attack for not just supporting the other candidate,” actress and top Sanders surrogate Rosario Dawson said at a Sanders campaign rally in Wilmington, Delaware, on Saturday. “Now, I’m with Monica Lewinsky with this,” she continued, invoking the infamous White House intern. “Bullying is bad. She has actually dedicated her life now to talking about that. And now, as a campaign strategy, we are being bullied, and, somehow that is O.K. and not being talked about with the richness that it needs”:

<...>

Asked about Dawson’s comments on CNN’s “State of the Union” Sunday, Sanders struggled to explain what Dawson was suggesting.

“One of your high-profile surrogates, actress Rosario Dawson, invoked Monica Lewinsky at one of your rallies,” host Jake Tapper said to the Vermont senator. “Do you think it’s appropriate for your surrogates to be talking about Monica Lewinsky on the campaign trail?”

he almost lost me, after that, and I have always felt that consenting adult behavior should remain the business of the consenting adults involved, the people who had a right to be pissed were the ones directly affected.

I still defended him because I felt that Ken Starr had no business rooting around in the man's underwear drawer in the first place.

But he lost a bit of the right to get all preachy and moralistic with the rest of us, to my mind. Yet he still couldn't resist the urge to drag out that same waggy finger in his recent defense of the drug war, and the policies he enabled which filled our prisons with people arrested for "crimes" like growing pot for cancer patients.

And it's very simple, Bill Clinton is a surrogate of the Hillary campaign just as Rosario Dawson is a surrogate of the Sanders campaign. Either surrogates' behavior is fair game, or it isn't.

Rosario Dawson, how dare you lecture Dolores Huerta?

When legendary farm labor, feminist, and voting rights activist Dolores Huerta published an op-ed saying she didn’t know enough about Sanders to vote for him, citing his inconsistent record on immigration and his lack of presence in the United Farm Workers struggle (that’s the labor union she co-founded with the late Cesar Chavez), the person who spoke up on Sanders’ behalf was an actress who once played Huerta in a poorly received biopic of Chavez. Rosario Dawson, a 36-year-old from New York City whose Latino ancestors hail from Puerto Rico, a US territory, and Cuba, the beneficiary of an open-door US immigration policy these last 57 years, wrote an op-ed in the Huffington Post lecturing Huerta.

“I am surprised, dismayed, and concerned that you would do your legacy such a disservice by becoming an instrument of the establishment, rather than joining this movement to create a better America like you once inspired us to do,” Dawson said.

It's dawson who's the poor little tool. Delores Huerta will go down in History as the Worker's Rights Icon that she is.. and rosario will be on the junk pile of history for ignorantly trying to portray her as #soestablishment

Forget that Huerta not only cofounded the UFW but has dedicated six decades to fighting on the front lines of the workers’ rights movement. She’s been arrested 22 times while demonstrating for the cause and was even hospitalized in 1988 – as a grandmother – with two broken ribs and a ruptured spleen while protesting President George HW Bush’s opposition to the UFW grape boycott. Forget all of it. Dawson has declared Huerta’s legacy destroyed on Bernie’s behalf.

In case there was any doubt as to whether Sanders approved of her message, Dawson was subsequently picked to introduce him at speaking events in San Diego and Los Angeles, where she told crowds to be wary of the media. She spoke of how she been registering Latino voters for 11 years through Voto Latino. Good for her. Dolores Huerta has been doing it for 56, since back when that kind of thing could get you lynched.

than than power"

This isn't about abuse, this is about the male perpetrators of abuse who feel obliged the privilege of invisibility for seriously flawed treatment of women they are in power over. Some guys in power think Kissinger said "power never fails, no means yes, and if she's a bit inebriated, so much the better" instead of "no more effective aphrodisiac ."

I'm sorry, the POTUS poaching trim in a dark far corridor from a twenty-two year old barely paid intern was wrong.

Should he have lost his job over it? Absolutely not. But he never should have lied about it. Right after his convention Big Dog and Hillary went on Sixty Minutes and discussed Bill's having tapped strange outside of their marriage but that he had come clean and that they worked it out and she had forgiven him, and then the American people did, too.

After all: It was business as usual. Just standard procedure. If no one can tell if he drove it home with any of the Arkansas accusers, Bill had a hand in it. He poisoned his own well by parsing 'is' and lying - looking straight into the faces of everyone on TV - "I did not have sex with that woman" about Lewinski. And the whole time that he's committing perjury and paying off some of his other accusers in other courtrooms and lawyer's offices.

So while the GOP were vultures drawn by blood, there was enough smoke to suspect fire.
