A major Jewish advocacy organization on Monday blasted Sen. Bernie Sanders (I-Vt.) for saying parts of Baltimore and the West Bank have comparable suffering.
What do the serious issues Baltimores leadership and population are confronting have to do with Palestinian life in the West Bank? American Jewish Committee CEO David Harris asked in a statement.
Inserting the Israel-Palestinian conflict into unrelated American political discourse serves only one purpose to encourage those who are narrowly focused on assailing Israel for any shortcomings, failings by the Palestinian Authority.
Sanders on Saturday said that the worst areas of Baltimore resemble the dire living conditions of some Palestinians in the West Bank.

(2,340 posts)and so is my sister and the other people at the Seder on Friday night. He has the Jewish Progressive vote. Do you know what kind of conditions Palestinians live under? Do you approve of the illegal settlements by the Brooklyn Orthodox community? It's time to open your eyes and lean more toward Hillel than Shammai.

(26,060 posts)to see what's going on there so I'm very well aware. Everyone (except for one independent) sitting at that table on Saturday has been a Democrat their entire lives. And the reasons they're not voting for Bernie cover the gamut. They think he's a foreign policy novice, that socialism breeds laziness and when it comes to the I/P debate, they think he's naive (as we all were at one time on that issue). This also covers the ones in their 20s - all voting for Hillary. YOu may want to read the article I linked to above:

It may help explain.

(2,340 posts)How does that make your opinion more legitimate? When you go to Israel, do you visit the West Bank and Gaza? I base my political decisions on larger issues facing the United States. "Socialism breeds laziness?" Honestly? Do you know anything about the founding of Israel? Do you consider those particular Socialists lazy?
I'll read your article later, but I don't base my opinions on a narrowly focused publication.

(26,060 posts)more legitimate? What's with the Bernie supporters shoving words into people's mouths? I DO think actually being in Israel gives one a broader sense of the story but saying it's more legitimate are your words, not mine. Is Israel still an entirely socialist country? No, it's not. Because they also know that socialist countries are not known for their innovation. It HAD to be started as socialist country - so many of the founding members had NOTHING as they were just leaving the camps. The article isn't about the socialism - it's about the ridiculous notion that the only "legitimate Jews" are those like Bernie.
Madam Mossfern
(2,340 posts)Who said that?
It was you who was implying the opposite in your post.
You coined the term "lazy Socialist," not me.

(26,060 posts)about socialism making a people intellectually lazy - they asked me which socialist country was known for innovation - I couldn't come up with one. Can you? We ALL believe in a social safety net - welfare, social security, that's why we're all Democrats which is not the same thing as believing in socialism. Between state and federal, some of us are paying over 45% of our income in taxes - we don't want to be paying even more. NONE of us use off shore tax shelters - we love our country.

I hope not.
Progressive Jewish people in Israel and the United States are opposed to the reactionary and racist policies of the right-wing regime.
Many are supporting Bernie Sanders.

He can't just go around blurting out whatever comes into his head. No matter how good the analogy may seem at the time, he needs to be better prepared. He's just not ready ... and apparently the voters who are paying attention are realizing that too.

(42,862 posts)... who's willing to say whatever without regard to the truth, accuracy, or who it may offend. The fact that Bernie's gotten to the "anything goes" stage, and the "fuck-it, what have we got to lose" mentality... well ... it's clear to me that they KNOW they're not going to win the nomination, and so what other choice do they have than to "let 'er rip" and "get 'er done"
Ugh! Looks like the paragon of honesty and virtue is just like any other politician after all. (We've always known this, so it's absolutely no surprise to me ... but it's good to have the hypocrisy of his supporters laid out in plain view for all to behold.)

(9,385 posts)The only difference is bombs aren't dropping, but as far as living conditions, they're pretty bad in some places. And overall, both cities have changed a LOT for the worse since the 1960s prior to the riots.
The money grubbers running amok, and the drug dealers' influx up and down I-95 has been horrific.
I'm glad he's bringing up things like this and he's the ONLY one doing it. It's about time someone did. Most civic leaders are too busy sucking up to the graft machine that all of them are part of like some infected country club, to disturb everyone's hypothetical fantasies of personal prosperity which only the few at the top actually have.
Until recently, the 99% didn't realize that nobody was on our side anymore. We thought we had few leaders. But no, that isn't the case. And hasn't been for some time.
Anybody bashing Sanders for this is despicable.
