2016 Postmortem
Related: About this forumhuge facebook groups for Bernie are being banned via bogus alerts
Four communities with more than 120,000 members total have been banned in quick succession today. Groups for Bernie. Here's the message on facebook, from the Bernie Sanders Social Network group:
Please share this to any Bernie groups you're in. The "online activist" group Hillary's super PAC hired(basically paid trolls) are striking tonight. By spamming the "report post to Facebook" feature on posts in Bernie groups, they've successfully shut down 3 of the largest Bernie groups within the past 20 minutes. Bernie Believers, Bernie Activists, and Bernie Sanders is my Hero had over 120,000 group members.
Don't panic! This should only be temporary until Facebook reviews the situation. Forgetting for a moment that this is easily one of the slimiest tactics I've ever seen in politics, you can still go to reddit to keep current on what's going on in the campaign. They hit us the night before tomorrow's primaries for a reason. Stay organized and stay informed.

(66 posts)Be proud your candidate needs that kind of paid support. There's not much organic out there for corporate shills.
nolawarlock
(1,729 posts)Neither impresses me. Bernie claims Hillary is on the take by greedy corporations. It didn't stop him from trying to use the Vatican to inspire a little old-fashioned religious devotion for his cause. Whether people are promoting Hillary because they were offered money or whether they're promoting Bernie because they have blindly accepted his vision to the point where they do not deviate from his views by a millimeter, neither impresses me. Frankly, I'm still amazed at how pro-gun all these super leftist Bernie supporters have become. Can't they just say, "hey, I agree with nine out of ten of this guy's policies?" No. They have to find some way to force their positions into agreement with his entire platform. That scares me as much as any religious cult.
Crabby Abbey
(66 posts)Pope Frances would never invite Hillary. Hahahahahahahahahahahahaha! So make it a negative. Again, people who are paying attention know this Pope wants economic morality. Only one person running making that the priority.
Go Birdie Sanders! Even nature knows he's for all of us.
nolawarlock
(1,729 posts)In fact, not a single other Hillary supporter spoke of my particular issues with that visit, which was why I finally joined this site after years of lurking in the first place. While I do think that invite was orchestrated in a sleazy way, who invited who was far less of an issue than the hypocrisy of claiming that our government is controlled by wealthy and powerful corporations only to attempt (and I mean attempt) to curry favor with one of the wealthiest and most powerful institutions on earth. Oh, and they're a foreign nation to boot. And I also had a major issue with the Vatican participating in this, even though I ultimately think the Pope himself probably wanted to run far away from this and it looks like he was manipulated every step of the way.
If either Sorondo or the Pope (the latter whom, incidentally, did not invite Sanders) invited Hillary, I would have been equally irritated. In fact, if it had been Hillary and not Bernie, I would have actually switched from Hillary to Bernie over it.
But if you want to lump me in with whoever, feel free. I've been called a sock and a troll so many times this past few weeks, that I'm used to it.
Crabby Abbey
(66 posts)Disgusting. Go get your paycheck.
nolawarlock
(1,729 posts)It was sleazy. Sanders had Sachs pitch this to Sorondo, end-game around Archer (who was actually furious enough to speak about ityeah, she was on the invitation but she was clearly not consulted in any way that ended with approval). Then, when it was clear that the Pope was trying to escape this sideshow with his "querido hermano" letter to Sorondo (which Bernie supporters claimed on here was the Pope calling Bernie "brother" and only one Sanders supporter corrected that OPonly one) expressing regret for missing the conference, Sornondo cooked up a last minute handshake the night before by which Bernie would have the lurk about the lobby of the hotel (which Bernie supporters here claimed was the Pope's private residence that Bernie was invited by the Pope to when it was actually a residence that most of the conference attendees stay at and the Pope lives at in order to appear more humble), so that he could have a water cooler conversation for about five minutes.
The whole thing was disgusting. It sets a terrible precedent. I don't want our presidential candidates looking for tacit endorsements from the Vatican anymore than I want them currying favor from Liberty University or, worse, Bob Jones University (thank heavens they jumped into the sharkyou never hear about them anymore). And too many Bernie supporters here reveled into the potential boost in Catholic votes to believe any claims that this was not sought out for expressly that purpose. What happens when we set that precedent and then the Church takes a turn we don't like but now we're stuck seeking the endorsement of someone who is probably even more anti-gay and anti-woman than this Pope (who is both)?
And worse, beyond the minuscule timeline of Bernie Sanders or even the broader timeline of the next few decades of American elections, I don't want a 2,000 year old institution that gave us the Crusades, Witch Burnings, and the Inquisition taking an active role in manipulating our elections. I'd rather have Goldman Sachs, and that's really saying something because I really don't think corporations should be manipulating government either.

Not only how I've seen Hillary supporters attacked, silenced, and alert-stalked here by virtue of a jury system that favors a site that's 80% Bernie supporters, but also the absolute viciousness I've seen on Facebook. (1,729 posts)Unlike this site and it's lovely jury system, I have seen some of the worst things on Facebook alerted with not even a finger lifted to remove it. I've seen hundreds and hundreds of people report the same abusive item and get no response. If Facebook actually banned a page for a credible threat of violence, I would be willing to bet there was one. I'd love to see the specific posts that were alerted. More importantly, I'd love to see how people here would perform the mental calisthenics necessary to justify those posts.
jimmy_crack_corn
(79 posts)The concern then is on Hillary voluntarily defending a Rapist. Hillary in the 1975 and a sexual abuse case where Hillary took the rape victim "through Hell"
Hillary Clinton took me through Hell, the victim said.
Hillary said the victim was "emotionally unstable, with a tendency to seek out older men and engage in fantasizing".
According to the daily beast article, the victim said "if she saw Clinton today, she would call her out for what she sees as the hypocrisy of Clintons current campaign to fight for womens rights compared to her actions regarding this rape case so long ago."
By the way Hillary lied about it in 2014 when she said "But at least in our system you have an obligation, and once I was appointed I fulfilled that obligation, she wasn't actually a defense lawyer but was actually asked if she would represent the rapist as a favor to him, so she had a choice !!!
Now on the tape, in her own voice she was actually asked if she would represent the rapist as a favor to him, so she had a choice !!!

(27,815 posts)... is your take on it.
But what would be gained by alerting on Bernie FB pages? Will it change the outcome of tomorrow's races?
The "alert" I saw had to do with threats of violence. The logical conclusion would be that facing tomorrow's defeat, a few Bernie supporters got a bit too agitated and said things they shouldn't have.
Have you seen the comments left on the FB pages of John Lewis, Gabby Giffords, Al Franken, Elizabeth Warren, etc., by Bernie supporters? It's not like they aren't already known for getting a bit hot-under-the-collar when they feel like it.
grasswire

Lunacy.
NanceGreggs
(27,815 posts)FB shuts down pages based on threats of violence, suggesting it, or encouraging it.
They are not the least bit interested in assessing whether someone "meant it", or was "capable of it" - that's not their job.
grasswire
(50,130 posts)I don't believe that genuine Bernie followers are capable of threatening violence, suggesting it, or encouraging it.
I do believe that there are plenty of ratfuckers out there on facebook. I see them every day. They usually seem to espouse Trump.
NanceGreggs
(27,815 posts)But that doesn't mean they're HRC people either - so why jump to one conclusion and not the other?
There's precedent here. The comments BS supporters left on the FB pages of people who endorsed HRC are well known, and have been documented and written about. There are also the threatening letters, emails and phone calls to super-delegates from BS supporters.
So it's not a stretch to think they'd post things on Bernie's FB pages that were threatening.
BreakfastClub

(27,815 posts)... that people can get in their anti-HRC digs before tomorrow's primaries - which many here fear will be the last night they can do so before Skinner brings the hammer down on people bashing the apparent nominee.
He won't - but they don't know that for sure. So it's throw-everything-at-the-wall night before it's too late.
But I have to say this "Hillary shut down Bernie's FB pages" story is an absolute hoot! Who knew that desperation could be THIS entertaining!

NanceGreggs
(27,815 posts)What kind of ridiculous logic is THAT? How can she be condoning the behaviour of people she doesn't even KNOW about?
Given all of the publicity about what Bernie supporters have posted on the FB pages of John Lewis, Gaby Giffords, Al Franken, Elizabeth Warren, etc., without a peep out of Bernie, I guess we can just assume he condoned all of that - right?

(2,495 posts)why is the system out to get Bernie? he who would singlehandedly fix capitalism, ensure that guns hurt no one, and let his democratic self out in full glory.
even google developers are probably writing code to skew election results and polls. I think when a poll result is displayed, Bernie and Hillary results are swapped so Bernie always seems to be behind.
while I'm at it. I don't understand why Hillary should win the nomination just because she has more declared delegates and superdelegates. when does having more votes give her the right to take the nomination? Especially if, by the current changing in support, if the nomination was delayed for another year, Bernie would win. Why is Hillary so corrupt that she has worked the system so that the nominee has to be selected this year.
Hillary has all the power to corrupt the system by having votes counted, nominations this year, and 35 years as a lawyer, first lady, best selling author, senator, secretary of state. what does she know. And given the chance, couldn't all of us do what she's done? Bernie could. And Hillary didn't let him do any of those things. I would vote for Bernie but Hillary won't let me.

(5,636 posts)... Why would legitimate Hillary supporters antagonize Bernie supporters in this way at this time? Frankly, it would make more sense for Bernie supporters to do that to Hillary, since it's an act of desperation, and Hillary is hardly desperate. My guess is these acts are being committed by those trying to sow discord among Democrats. Hopefully not any Bernie supporters will fall for it. But, if there's proof that it's being done by the Hillary super PAC, by all means share it.

(5,636 posts)... but again it seems to m that the only people at this point who are interested in sowing discord between Bernie and Hillary supporters are the Republicans. Hillary is clearly winning the primary race, so has no motive for such shenanigans at this point. If this happened a few weeks ago, it might make a little more sense, but it doesn't make any sense right now.
By the way, I don't really use Facebook much, but it appears that Viva Bernie is up and running, and the article it links to simply presumes it's Hillary supporters doing this. But, again, I think that's unlikely (unless it's a group of obnoxious teens).
Also, there's at least one twitter claiming that this was a Facebook problem, not an attack on Sanders (about halfway down, a Twitter from Aidan King, who apparently is a very, very active in the Sanders campaign):
