FBI's Clinton probe expands to public corruption track

The FBI investigation into Hillary Clinton’s use of private email as secretary of state has expanded to look at whether the possible “intersection” of Clinton Foundation work and State Department business may have violated public corruption laws, three intelligence sources not authorized to speak on the record told Fox News.

This new investigative track is in addition to the focus on classified material found on Clinton’s personal server.

"The agents are investigating the possible intersection of Clinton Foundation donations, the dispensation of State Department contracts and whether regular processes were followed," one source said.

Clinton, speaking to the Des Moines Register, on Monday pushed back on the details of a second investigative track. According to reporter Jennifer Jacobs, Clinton said Monday she has heard nothing from the FBI.

During a Democratic administration, no less. How flipping stupid does she have to be? How flipping awkward a position she has left our leaders in...I actually feel sorry for some of them, who deserved better.

It takes a special kind of person to keep up with Fox News propaganda. Stick with them and you will be spouting "We Report, You Decide" talking points with the best of them.

Even more funny.

"Anyone know if this is still an active part of the investigation? I can't keep up..."

That is exactly how "We Report, You Decide" is done.

you can hear the same crap! Just like Obama's birth certificate - you can make up and repeat any kind of trash or rumor.

You do realize that no one is left on DU who cares about the imaginary scandals? There are a bunch of Blemmings self-stimulating; and a few of us long time political junkies who still get a little entertainment.

Personally, I hope that the RWers continue to waste time and money on GDP, because that means they are NOT out polluting the real undecided voters. I also say it is wasting money because it's been clear for quite a while that some serial posters on DU are trolls; likely paid operatives. It's hard to separate trolls from zealots or people with personality disorders or enthusiastic supporters who simply have endless time and energy. The trolls don't have to "keep up" because someone is handing them scripted posts!

Now, if there was an honest investigation, we could find out how much Bernie money really is coming from anti-Hillary 1%ers. We also would have emails and phone calls from inside the NRA talking about supporting Bernie without openingly saying so. We also would have transcripts of Bernie's discussions with the Russians from his honeymoon. We might have tapes of conversations behind closed doors with military contractors about the F22 and why it ended up in Burlington, VT for God's sake!!

Gosh, I wish I could keep up with all of Bernie's secret deals!!

Tue Apr 26, 2016, 06:35 AM
Apr 2016

I haven't seen anything to this effect at all, including this report back in January.

But I must say that, not knowing about this report, I speculated here at DU not long ago, that the FBI wouldn't be taking a year on this not-yet-completed investigation, and employ 50 to 150 agents on it (depending on who you believe), and wouldn't have immunized a witness (the tech who set up her private email server), and wouldn't have asked the State Dept. to step out of the investigation, and wouldn't have brought the DOJ in, merely over Clinton's cavalier treatment of classified material. She was, after all, Secretary of State. I felt--and still feel--pretty sure that the investigation goes beyond the server itself and is into what Clinton was using this private server FOR.

The FBI has also consulted the NSA (and probably the CIA) reportedly on identification of classified material in Clinton's emails. Some items have been redacted from FOIA requests. Clinton lied about this. She said that the 30,000 emails she deleted were personal in nature but this was not true. The FBI reportedly recovered some of these, and some were work emails containing classified material. This seems to have been Clinton evading FOIA laws. (All government documents have to be preserved and are subject to FOIA requests.)

So there are multiple issues regarding the private server itself. FOIA issues. National security issues. Obstruction of justice issues.

It's kind of bizarre. We have someone, Clinton, who wants to be president of the United States and couldn't obey the most elemental rules and laws that protect the U.S. government from hacker penetration of our government officials' emails?

Well, we've had other instances of that by high government officials, though NOT a private server, for godssakes! THAT was an invitation to hackers. It's not known if hackers got into her server but they got close by hacking one of her correspondents (Sydney Blumenthal over at the Clinton Foundation, a private entity).

Still, my guess would be that the FBI wouldn't recommend indictment for this but that the NSA, CIA, et al, might bargain with her (over a threatened FBI recommendation to indict) to guarantee no private server if she becomes president.

So what's taking so long? That is the question. A year's FBI work running into the middle of a presidential campaign year, with one candidate a target of their investigation, and no end in sight. What else might they be investigating? Pay-to-play corruption is the obvious possibility.

Could be they are protecting her from the RW morons in Congress--are holding onto this investigation for the purpose of a cover up. She's one of the rich and powerful and very well connected in the world of government profiteers, military and otherwise. Like Bush, Cheney & Rumsfeld, she may well be above the law.

That's one possibility Another is that the FBI will be blasted with charges of interference in politics no matter what they do, and they are therefore uncertain what to do. If they recommend indictment, they better have good, solid evidence. And if they don't, they better have a convincing report that she did not break the law. Being uncertain takes time.

Or they could just be proceeding normally, i.e., they have good reason to pursue this investigation; they are not finished, and they will not be rushed by political considerations.

It does seem incredible, though, that they might let her get nominated and elected without telling the public what they think, either way.

'One shot at the queen': FBI, AG intensify focus on Clinton email probe, FOX News, March 31, 2016
http://www.foxnews.com/politics/2016/03/31/one-shot-at-queen-fbi-ag-intensify-focus-on-clinton-email-probe.html

As the FBI enters the final phases of its investigation into Hillary Clinton’s use of an unauthorized email server for government business, Attorney General Loretta Lynch and FBI Director James Comey are meeting frequently to discuss the progress and handling of the highly sensitive case, a source told Fox News.

Among the issues discussed in the meetings, which have been taking place several times per week, are who will be interviewed and in what order, according to an intelligence source close to the ongoing case. Emails released by the State Department have already shown Clinton and several key aides used the personal, unsecured network to send more than 1,000 messages which have been deemed classified.

“In a case like this you get one shot at the queen,” the source, who was not authorized to speak on the record, said referring to Clinton, the former secretary of state and current front-runner for the Democratic presidential nomination. “The pressures are enormous on the agents, as the case has to be airtight and perfect.”
(snip)
As the interviews evolve, the FBI, as first reported by Fox News last fall, will explore possible violations of Criminal Code section 1001, which covers "statements or entries generally," and can be applied when an individual makes misleading or false statements that cause federal agents to expend additional resources and time. Legal experts, as well as a former FBI agent, told Fox News Section 1001 could apply if Clinton, her aides or attorney were not forthcoming with FBI agents about her emails, classification and whether only non-government records were destroyed.
(more at link)

We know she has re-engaged her criminal attorney, and the Politico/Vice News FOIA lawsuit has a "show cause PUBLICLY why releasing the records could harm an investigation" deadline of today, so things are looking very interesting for this week.

I don't know why, but I expect her interview is going to take place after today's primary; Comey has to be cautious about making sure it doesn't look like the FBI is interfering in the political process.

All of the leaks keep discussing indictment and criminal issues; that tells me the sources are not using "if" but "when" statements, and the assurance is leaking into the reporters writing in subtle ways.

This has been most educational - for example, people who think Hillary's "the FBI hasn't told me I'm being investigated" actually means anything are going to be in for a rude awakening.
