Are we all trolls now?

As the Democratic primary race moves toward its latter days, the divisions between supporters of its two candidates are becoming even more contentious than previously. Accusations of "trollery" are more frequent, coming up every time anything happens. Last night's Facebook glitch is a great example of this. Despite even Sanders' page admins declaring that what happened was a Facebook database error, the troll-naming phenomenon continues apace today.

Supporters of the two candidates disagree. There's nothing strange about that. It happens in every campaign. But assigning evil intent to people, simply because of that disagreement makes no sense at all. Is the race polarized? Of course it is. We all want the candidate we support to win the nomination. So? What else is new?

Am I a "Hillary Troll?" Nope. Not in any way. Not paid. Not a member of any Internet group that attacks supporters of Bernie Sanders. None of that. I'm a Democrat who supports one of the candidates. That's it. I post sometimes about that. I also post sometimes about Democrats coming together after the primaries are over and we have a nominee. I post frequently that I'll be working hard to elect that nominee, regardless of who it is.

And yet, despite all that, I've been called a troll. It's silly. It advances nobody's cause. It helps in no way. Disagreement is not "trollery." It is just disagreement. It's a political campaign. We can all support whomever we choose, and we should be able to do that without name-calling, I think.

That's my opinion. Thanks for reading it.

Emotions run hot, and the signal is hard to pick out of the noise. "Trolling" is, I think, a more detached pastime than what I see going on here. The inflammatory posting more closely resembles a middle school cafeteria, with sniping generally aimed from one side at the other--and all sorts of barely-veiled personal attacks designed to hurt particular posters.

They went into Green and liberal online forums/bulletin boards to coax Greens to stick with Nader and not trade their votes.

Probably makes a lot less of a difference today.

Can anyone imagine that paid trolls at DU would impact anything whatsoever?

There are so many people on DU right now who think everything is a conspiracy of some kind. I am a Democrat who supports the candidate of my choice, I am not a troll, I am not a DINO and I do consider myself progressive, but not enough for some people.

It is sad how this election is going.

That isn't to say there aren't. In all honesty, I don't really care. If they follow the board rules that is all I deem to be necessary to post here. I remember thinking ProSense was one for a while. Then again, ProSense brought many great links and shared a lot of excellent material. We butted heads often but they really brought some good stuff.

If ProSense is still a member here I mean no offense by this. We should all be as professional in our posts.

Is that there are good people doing trollish stuff on both sides. I wish people could view this election in a more reasonable way or something. It's an election. Just like every election, we each only have one vote, and we do what we can: vote and work on campaigns. We shouldn't attack people over it. Bernie voters have a right to vote for Bernie and to keep working on his campaign if he's still campaigning. That isn't destroying the Democartic Party. Hillary voters have a right to vote for her and they aren't evil and they are "real Democrats." There are real differences between them, but their positions are more the same than different, particularly in areas where they'll have power to make change.

akin to evil intentions...selling out the little guy for personal gain. I think we have arrived at the point where threats of "but but the Supreme Court" will no longer be sufficient reason for Dems to justify pulling the lever for the lesser of two evils. The party may well die as a result, but I'm quite sure a new, truly progressive party will arise to take their place.

Good post. It seems to me that this is an epic time of change for both parties; I don't know how "formal" splits take place, but it seems like we have four different ideologies battling for the naming rights of two different parties.

I think the insult trolls are pretty obvious - I've been tempted to join their ranks a time or two myself.

The admins should be happy; a good flame war is great for traffic!

Regardless of the candidate of choice, any of ours is miles ahead of the GOP choices. Sure, some folks are overheated in their support and step over the lines of polite discourse, but this too shall pass. Let's hope the energy will be usefully rechanneled in the GE and the years ahead to bring our country back from the brink we've been teetering on since at least 1980.

Whatever. The admins could find out I'm a real person in two seconds. And you could actually ask them if they spent any time here.

How you go about this 'support' defines your trollery, and throughout you've shown to post many troll light OPs

it is insulting to have you post OPs under the guise of 'Disagreement is not "trollery." It is just disagreement', if you posted OPs that centered on presenting just a factual point without the pinch of troll you add to your OPs I'd leave it at that and not need to call you out on it but you CHOOSE to add that extra pinch of troll to your OPs and that needs to be called out

Have a day!
