How Clinton Won Pennsylvania

Hillary Clinton won the Democratic primary for president in Pennsylvania by rolling up impressive victory margins in the state's most populous counties. She won Philadelphia by more than 87,000 votes, and her combined victory margin in the city and its four suburban counties supplied her with almost three-quarters of her statewide lead. Bernie Sanders won 30 of Pennsylvania's 67 counties, mostly rural, lightly populated counties in the middle of the state.

The counties in the map below are extruded, with the heights proportional to each candidate's victory margin in the counties they won.

Many of my liberal friends here in Philadelphia voted for Bernie (although universally, they will vote for Hillary come Fall). But it seems the majority outnumbered them in this Democratic stronghold.

As I wrote weeks and weeks ago, there's no reason to believe that pattern would suddenly get flipped upside down. People have started saying the writing's on the wall. It was on the wall a long time ago.
