Sanders: Im In It to Win It
April 27, 2016
WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. Declaring that he is in this campaign to win and become the Democratic nominee, U.S. Sen. Bernie Sanders on Wednesday told a rally at Purdue University that he is the Democrats best hope to defeat Donald Trump in November.
If you want the candidate who will be the strongest nominee, youre looking at that candidate right now, Sanders told 2,267 cheering supporters at the rally in a student center. The reason I am the strongest candidate is that our campaign is appealing not just to Democrats but to independents all over this country and even some Republicans.
In poll after poll, Sanders fares much better than Hillary Clinton in matchups with Trump and other Republican White House hopefuls.
Sanders appeal to independents was evident on Tuesday when he won by 12-points in Rhode Island, a state with an open primary where independents could vote. That outcome should send a message to delegates going to the Democratic National Convention this summer, he said.
Sanders acknowledged that Clinton currently leads in the number of delegates headed to Philadelphia, but he said sees a narrow path to victory as voters in Indiana go to the polls next Tuesday and nine more states have elections on the calendar before the primary process comes to a close in June.
We are behind today. But you know what? Unusual things happen in politics, he said. With your help, superdelegates may reach the conclusion that Bernie Sanders will be the strongest candidate against Donald Trump or any other candidate.
Sanders was headed later Wednesday to another rally in Bloomington, Indiana, before flying to Oregon, another state where voters have yet to weigh in on who should be the Democratic Party nominee for president.

How much more explicit does he need to be?

(16,916 posts)The OP posted that Bernie was still in it to win it, you countered with a walk back, softening the meaning of what Bernie said, but Bernie was EXPLICIT.
He's in this to win the nomination.
Sure there are levels of goals, but on this issue, with this speech, Bernie was very clear.
None of this has anything to do with a "cult of personality," so I don't know why you even went there - unless you think Bernie is trying to foment such a cult?

(37,428 posts)I would never say that Clinton only wants to sit in the Oval Office's big chair, or that her supporters just want to elect a woman.
A serious presidential contender not only wants to win the office, but to enact an agenda. A real supporter realizes that there are plenty of things to do, even if we don't agree with n ow our candidate approaches every single one.
It wasn't a walk-back. There are indeed many "its" to win--the many goals you mentioned--and there will be almost as many after the convention. We are all after more than seeing our favorite in a particular slot on the ticket.

(16,916 posts)Bernie clearly made a point of eliminating any doubt - he's in this race in to win the nomination. Everything else you wrote is your opinion, and while you're welcome to your own opinions, you certainly didn't come across like you agreed with what Bernie said. Your post looked as if you were offering an alternative take on what "in it to win it" might mean to the campaign.
In the end, none of your opinions change the fact of what Bernie clearly stated in the speech the OP quoted.
Cheers

(68,576 posts)Obviously, we should just give it to him...who cares about the people that voted for Hillary.

(16,916 posts)And appears to self identify as sarcasm, but you are a frequent poster in the Hillary group.

(11,546 posts)He said it a long while back and he has said it again. Why don't people just let DEMOCRACY happen and leave it alone?
So glad he's in it still. #ImWithHim
