Joe Scar says it's because the mayor, who is very disappointed in the President, doesn't want to give him the opportunity to politicize the hurricane.
Anyone know if Bloomberg actually said no to a presidential visit? Would his permission really be necessary?
(Oh, and fuck Joe Scar.)

NEW YORK -- President Barack Obama will be getting a firsthand look at the damage done by the superstorm in New Jersey but not in New York City - and Mayor Michael Bloomberg is OK with that.
Bloomberg on Tuesday said he spoke to Obama and his chief of staff, Jack Lew, and told them the city would "love to have him, but we've got lots of things to do.
Bloomberg said that he wasn't trying to "dis" the president and that his trip to New Jersey on Wednesday would represent the whole region.

(26,060 posts)The fact is that resources don't need to be diverted so Pres Obama can visit. The mayor is probably rolling his eyes at this story. I do think that people get comfort from a visit but right now is not the time.

But I would like to know what Gocernor Coumo had to say about that?

(1,330 posts)Getting the President in and out of rural NJ, or to the devastated coast, is not the same operational task as getting him and out of the streets of Manhattan.
The purpose of the visit is not a photo-op, but to gain first-hand knowledge. That first-hand knowledge is only necessary to help assess impact and allocate resources. I suspect that the rescue/repair/clean-up in NY is well-organized. It's a case of "here's what we need, but we've got the plan in place to do the job." After all, NYC does have experience with emergencies and, unfortunately, a disaster. NJ does not. And the coast in particular experienced something unexpected.
Is politics in the background? Of course. But I think that right now those involved (Christie, Cuomo, Bloomberg, the mayors and governors of other cities and states, and of course THE PRESIDENT) are focused on doing their jobs and helping people.
