So, while on a very superficial level they may seem the same, there are some much more grown up things to take into consideration.

first off in '08 we were coming off of a disastrous 8 year Republican reign, that left us holding a ruined economy and 2 wars, IMO there was about as much chance that a Republican would re-claim the WH then as there was in 1976 after Watergate and San Clemency

secondly IMO it's very possible the DNC quietly pressured Hillary to withdraw lest she alienate the Black Democratic voter base with what some might call racist campaigning anyone remember Obama Boyz?
