The swing in 2008 between Obama and McCain occured after the bubble burst on the economy

which sent us into the great recession. It was a close race until then. It was an event that was out of the control of the two candidates. Other that that, there has not been a big swing after the conventions since 1988, before the age of 24 hour news channels, the internet and social media.

After McCain said "the fundamentals of the economy are strong" right after the collapse.

Before that they hid every stupid thing he said or did.

Same w Romney and 47% statement.

Their job is to help elect Republicans. Sadly Republicans keep fucking it up for them by saying insane stuff.

Obama had a small but steady lead before the conventions. After the Republican convention, McCain had a big bounce. After that, it is hard to disentangle the effects of the economy tanking, the bounce fading, and Palin becoming more well known. The economy obviously hurt McCain, but I think Obama would have still won anyway.
