In August of 2003 we had a trip to Detroit planned to visit my husband's family. The evening before we were to fly there, there was a huge blackout in the northeast part of the U.S. including much of Michigan. The flight into the Detroit airport was amazing. We wound up having to go around once due to a brief power outage at the airport, which meant we flew at a pretty low altitude, probably 5,000 feet or less, for a much longer time over the metro area than we otherwise would have. It was like being in a science fiction movie, one of the ones in which the entire population of the planet just vanishes. There were almost no cars on the roads. It was obvious that no businesses were open. It was creepy.
We landed, and because we had a rental car reservation, we were able to pick up a car, although the agency had not been able to fill it with gas, so we had less than a half tank. On our way to our hotel, we were listening to a press conference Governor Granholm was holding. It was truly awesome. That woman was in full possession of the facts of what was going on, was detailing how they were getting food and water to the most vulnerable citizens. Not to mention all the utility crews did an equally awesome job of getting the power on.
Now I am not in any way comparing this to what's currently happening on our East Coast, because there simply is no comparison. Eight years ago there was no damage to speak of from the blackout, just the inconvenience of being without power for a number of hours. But Granholm's handling of the situation was so good, so strong, so reassuring.
