Trump tells Kimmel he'd be willing to debate Sanders for charity

Last Updated May 26, 2016 12:50 AM EDT

Before hitting a private fundraiser in Los Angeles, Donald Trump taped a guest appearance on ABC's "Jimmy Kimmel Live," where he fielded questions from the late-night host on a range of topics -- including transgender bathrooms, and whether he'd debate Bernie Sanders.

Kimmel asked Trump if he'd be willing to debate Sanders, given that Hillary Clinton had turned her primary opponent down for a California debate. Trump declared he would -- as long as the proceeds go to charity.

As he accepted the hypothetical debate, Trump asked, perhaps jokingly, how much Sanders would be willing to pay him -- for charity -- then conceded that it would be fine if a network were willing to put up the money. Trump also said he has never met Sanders.

Sanders took to Twitter right away with his response:

I mean, it already is a big story, and it's just snowballing. She broke another promise with respect to the debate, and it sounds like Trump and Sanders are going to take advantage of that ill-considered move. Meantime, she has some very, very serious questions to answer--for the FBI, and for the American public.

I'll enjoy watching this debate if Trump doesn't back out (I suspect he will), but it will also serve as a stark reminder of how far she has fallen in such a short period.

If Clinton agreed, Sanders would ask for another debate after that and it would never end. The race is effectively over save for the formalities and everything has been debated thoroughly. Most people are not running around crying "omg, she broke her promise to debate". At this point I would wager that viewers are weary of debates and this protracted campaign.

75. Hillary supporters should actually consider the good that would come of this
Thu May 26, 2016, 02:10 AM
May 2016

I know one angle of this story that partisans will enhance - Bernie will show he's formidable against Trump. Clinton supporters will declare him delusional and presumptuous.

But there's another angle here worth exploring for both Bernie and Hillary supporters.

The party is fractured right now. There are many on the Left and left-leaning Independents who love Bernie but are chilly at best towards Clinton.

But what if Sanders goes toe to toe with Trump? Then the focus shifts. If his supporters, especially Millennials, see Bernie painting Trump as the ultimate enemy in a debate, they may find shifting to Clinton much more comfortable.

He could bring reticent or disillusioned supporters into the NeverTrump camp by nakedly exposing Trump's danger.

So, it feels kind of win-win to me. Bernie has the potential to gain further influence in the party, but he'll also be uniting the party by singling out the common enemy.

Part of me wants to say, "Going after the Republican nominee should be the Democratic nominee's prerogative." I want to go, ooh, poor form. But . . .

But if the goal is unity and shifting focus, this could work well for Clinton in the general.

I have a suspicion and think Trump still may yet back out, but if this did come off, I would be glued to the screen! I would LOVE to watch these two debate!

attack the Democratic Party's nominee? Not just telling the same lies about Hillary as Trump, but doing so on the same stage?

This is unprecedented treason against the party by a sore loser--joining the other party's General Election campaign while pretending to seek "his" party's nomination. Is this what Bernie means by "opening up the Democratic Party"?

and she is NOT the nominee. She may well be in July but until then Bernie has as much right to debate Trump as Hillary does.

Treason - like threatening National Security by writing e-mails on your own unapproved, hackable server?

about the show was the money raised for charity, with celebrities raising awareness for different organizations. This would be very much in keeping with his "prior to politics" public persona.

Celebrities never take game show money.
So if you are going to put a famous person on a game show for increased ratings by definition the money goes to charity, he had no say.

Please do provide a list of Trump Foundation - I've never heard of one - activities or anything else he has ever contributed to.

Some voters and hopefully superdelegates could realize he's the stronger candidate to take on Trump.

If the debate is scored a big win by Sanders, that shoots down the argument that Clinton is someone better prepared to stand up to Trump, doesn't it?

It could also hand California to Sanders. Clinton is foolish to duck and dodge, while Sanders is showing incredible backbone to take on the bully Trump before the primary is over.

IMO the way Tom Cotton has been seen since he and 46 Senate Rs sent a letter to the Iranian Parliament, trying to undermine US nuclear nonproliferation policy.

Bernie may be so miffed at DWS and the DNC that he wants to preempt them NOW, consequences be damned. The man doesn't seem to think two steps ahead, let alone play the three-dimensional chess of a President Obama or HRC.

May 2016

In the eyes of Hillary supporters and the DNC.

If he goes all out attack on trump,
Doesn't whine about 'unfairness' of the primary process
Doesn't conceede to any of trump's points
Challenges and calls out Trump on his racism, sexism and general bigotry
Calls him out on his failed businesses and self evaluation
Throws numbers, facts and figures at him, showing Trump up for the idiot he is

Then, then it would certainly give him some credit at the convention by showing he is a team player

Take the Blue Pill, Bernie!

[IMG][/IMG]

The problem is, he's crap at debates with the same old stump speech ad infinitum = how does it go?

"There is no justice, and I want you to hear this clearly, when the top 1/10th of 1 percent -- not 1 percent -- the top 1/10th of 1 percent today in America owns almost as much wealth as the bottom 90 percent," Sanders told the bored audience

In the eyes of Hillary supporters and the DNC". Why should he? He's done nothing wrong. They should be embarrassed for the crap that they've pulled from the beginning.

Bernie actually does very well at the debates. He crushes her in the after polls. You say "stump" and I say consistency. Something Hillary has no clue about.
