Trump tells Kimmel he'd be willing to debate Sanders for charity
Last Updated May 26, 2016 12:50 AM EDT
Before hitting a private fundraiser in Los Angeles, Donald Trump taped a guest appearance on ABC's "Jimmy Kimmel Live," where he fielded questions from the late-night host on a range of topics -- including transgender bathrooms, and whether he'd debate Bernie Sanders.
Kimmel asked Trump if he'd be willing to debate Sanders, given that Hillary Clinton had turned her primary opponent down for a California debate. Trump declared he would -- as long as the proceeds go to charity.
As he accepted the hypothetical debate, Trump asked, perhaps jokingly, how much Sanders would be willing to pay him -- for charity -- then conceded that it would be fine if a network were willing to put up the money. Trump also said he has never met Sanders.
Sanders took to Twitter right away with his response:

(12,530 posts)I mean, it already is a big story, and it's just snowballing. She broke another promise with respect to the debate, and it sounds like Trump and Sanders are going to take advantage of that ill-considered move. Meantime, she has some very, very serious questions to answer--for the FBI, and for the American public.
I'll enjoy watching this debate if Trump doesn't back out (I suspect he will), but it will also serve as a stark reminder of how far she has fallen in such a short period.
KingFlorez
(12,689 posts)If Clinton agreed, Sanders would ask for another debate after that and it would never end. The race is effectively over save for the formalities and everything has been debated thoroughly. Most people are not running around crying "omg, she broke her promise to debate". At this point I would wager that viewers are weary of debates and this protracted campaign.

And for charity to boot! Bernie would want you to be more positive about his ability to make big things happen!
DisgustipatedinCA
(12,530 posts)Trump flakes out because he's Trump, and then you get to claim that Samders failed to seal the deal. The problem with this is that you don't get to create the narrative, and also that Sanders supporters aren't quite that wooden. You can attempt to create that reality, but you won't enjoy any success.

(231 posts)but it was my understanding he donated $1 mil to vet charities. It was the other millionaires who pledged and then didn't follow thru on their donation making Trump look bad in the WaPo article.
Anyway hope this goes down. It would be great exposure and would love to see the contrast between Sanders and Trump on the issues. The charity idea is great. DWS, Hillary, etc that potentially try to stop such a debate would look bad considering the proceeds go to charity.

Prism
(5,815 posts)I know one angle of this story that partisans will enhance - Bernie will show he's formidable against Trump. Clinton supporters will declare him delusional and presumptuous.
But there's another angle here worth exploring for both Bernie and Hillary supporters.
The party is fractured right now. There are many on the Left and left-leaning Independents who love Bernie but are chilly at best towards Clinton.
But what if Sanders goes toe to toe with Trump? Then the focus shifts. If his supporters, especially Millennials, see Bernie painting Trump as the ultimate enemy in a debate, they may find shifting to Clinton much more comfortable.
He could bring reticent or disillusioned supporters into the NeverTrump camp by nakedly exposing Trump's danger.
So, it feels kind of win-win to me. Bernie has the potential to gain further influence in the party, but he'll also be uniting the party by singling out the common enemy.
Part of me wants to say, "Going after the Republican nominee should be the Democratic nominee's prerogative." I want to go, ooh, poor form. But . . .
But if the goal is unity and shifting focus, this could work well for Clinton in the general.

(5,818 posts)attack the Democratic Party's nominee? Not just telling the same lies about Hillary as Trump, but doing so on the same stage?
This is unprecedented treason against the party by a sore loser--joining the other party's General Election campaign while pretending to seek "his" party's nomination. Is this what Bernie means by "opening up the Democratic Party"?

(27,742 posts)Celebrities never take game show money.
So if you are going to put a famous person on a game show for increased ratings by definition the money goes to charity, he had no say.

(9,535 posts)Some voters and hopefully superdelegates could realize he's the stronger candidate to take on Trump.
If the debate is scored a big win by Sanders, that shoots down the argument that Clinton is someone better prepared to stand up to Trump, doesn't it?
It could also hand California to Sanders. Clinton is foolish to duck and dodge, while Sanders is showing incredible backbone to take on the bully Trump before the primary is over.
