2016 Postmortem
Related: About this forumBernie's debating Trump is consistent with Bernie's promise
From months ago, when Bernie was requesting a full debate schedule from DWS (https://berniesanders.com/wp-content/uploads/2015/06/Letter-to-DNC.pdf) he wrote the following:
That is why I believe we should be open to a less traditional form of debating by welcoming the opportunity to debate not only amongst members of the Democratic Party but also having debates between Democratic and Republican candidates during the primary process. I believe that these inter-party debates would put in dramatic focus the shallow and at times ridiculous policies and proposals being advocated by the Republican candidates and by their partys platform.
He's doing this to embarrass and defeat Trump. After all, Sanders did promise to do everything he could to defeat him. The only embarrassment Clinton suffers is her own fault by reneging on her promised third debate. She could have avoided it by just keeping her word; Sanders can't control that.

(2,280 posts)Donald Trump than the one that shows up on stage with Bernie.
Bernie wants Trump's supporters to cross over and vote for him in the remaining primaries. Trump wants Bernie's supporters for November.

I think if he thought he could get attention, he would debate a tomato plant.
Bernie wont be as much fun for him to debate though, there is that. Bernie is not a woman, so Trump cant viciously attack that, and overall Bernie is not target rich the way Hillary is perceived to be.
I say perceived because most of the negatives about her are right wing spin bullshit.
The most hilarious part of all this is Trump's insistence Bernie and the network donate to charity
Oh my fucking god, the most greedy motherfucker who ever lived insisting others donate...

(7,299 posts)yesterday. He needs to raise in the area of $1 billion not including outside PAC support. He ended debates in the Republican primary when he viewed it as being no longer beneficial to him. The advent of his big donor contributors will limit his independence. He will not be allowed to let a non-nominee take shots at him on a national stage. He did achieve his goal of getting Sanders supporters all riled up though. You are responding exactly as he wished.

(2,280 posts)It will be a double-team attack on Hillary. They are both campaigning against her right now.
Bernie wants Trump's supporters to cross over in the primary, and Trump wants Bernie's in the general.

(2,280 posts)Trump that you could ever imagine. A big part of his election strategy is to get Bernie voters to either vote for him or stay home. He has absolutely nothing to gain from saying anything bad about Bernie.
Bernie, it could go either way. He could be tough on Trump to show Democratic voters how tough he is, but he could also find common ground with Trump and jointly go after Hillary. Probably a bit of both.
Doesn't look like it's happening though, apparently Trump is backing out.

(4,229 posts)The Clinton camp is like the Trump camp in that they have taken numerous positions over time, Clinton and Trump are the wealthy elite, nobody knows what either stands for.
So Warren and Bernie who know what they stand for are going to define the attack FOR Hillary.

(1,182 posts)The posts were mostly from our barely-literate posters, so they can be hard to make sense of. The general complaint seems to be that Sanders was jumping at a chance to damage Hillary for his own gain/pleasure/whatever.
I was pointing out that this could possibly benefit all of us (including Hillary) by damaging Trump.
But, hey, Trump acting like a giant pussy will damage Trump anyway.
