Sanders camp: Discussions underway for Trump debate
By Jonathan Easley
Bernie Sanderss campaign manager says back-channel conversations are underway with Donald Trumps staff about setting up a bipartisan debate between the two presidential candidates.
I think it would benefit voters from across the country and I have to believe it would be one of the most-watched debates in presidential politics, Jeff Weaver said Thursday on MSNBC.
Let's see if he has the courage to go one-on-one with Bernie Sanders, he added.
The Sanders campaign is seeking to ramp up pressure on Trump to follow through on his Wednesday night remarks to late-night talk-show host Jimmy Kimmel.
Trump, the presumptive GOP nominee, said hed be open to debating Sanders if the proceeds went to charity.
Sanderss camp seized on the remarks and is trying to pressure the businessman to follow through.
The senator wants to do it, Sanders spokesman Michael Briggs told The Hill. Well see if Trump meant what he said.
The Trump campaign did not respond to a request for comment.
A Trump official earlier Thursday characterized the mogul's remarks as tongue-in-cheek.
Still, the official said Trumps team is considering the possibility after the remarks have received so much media attention.
Trump adviser Sarah Huckabee Sanders told MSNBC on Thursday that Trump is happy to debate Sanders at any point.

(3,473 posts)tRump would just be using the opportunity to get free airtime, a big audience and the ability to attack Secretary Clinton and not have her their to defend herself.
BS would have two options, both of them losers ... he could join in and attack Secretary Clinton as well, which would simply show the entire Democratic Party that BS is a lie and that he doesn't care about party at all ... or he could defend Clinton, which would make the BS cheerleaders lose their minds and would make their heads explode. I personally would hope for the second option.

(3,040 posts)And not personally attack anyone and will talk about the issues. Should Trump attack Clinton, I cannot see Sanders not defending her.

(10,122 posts)No need for Bernie to do it. Have a rule no personal attacks in debate.

I know one angle of this story that partisans will enhance - Bernie will show he's formidable against Trump. Clinton supporters will declare him delusional and presumptuous.
But there's another angle here worth exploring for both Bernie and Hillary supporters.
The party is fractured right now. There are many on the Left and left-leaning Independents who love Bernie but are chilly at best towards Clinton.
But what if Sanders goes toe to toe with Trump? Then the focus shifts. If his supporters, especially Millennials, see Bernie painting Trump as the ultimate enemy in a debate, they may find shifting to Clinton much more comfortable.
He could bring reticent or disillusioned supporters into the NeverTrump camp by nakedly exposing Trump's danger.
So, it feels kind of win-win to me. Bernie has the potential to gain further influence in the party, but he'll also be uniting the party by singling out the common enemy.
Part of me wants to say, "Going after the Republican nominee should be the Democratic nominee's prerogative." I want to go, ooh, poor form. But . . .
But if the goal is unity and shifting focus, this could work well for Clinton in the general.

(58,724 posts)You would think a pious man of God like Mike Huckabee (and presumably his family) would want nothing to do with Trump.

frazzled
(18,402 posts)and highly presumptive, for a Democratic candidate for the nomination (especially the second-place candidate) to debate the Republican nominee before the end of the primary season and the Convention. It would even be unprecedented for the frontrunner or presumptive nominee to do so.
The Democratic and Republican nominees do not debate until after the two conventions are completed.
Can you imagine if Hillary Clinton had agreed in late May 2008 to debate John McCain? Or even if Obama had? But never discount Bernie Sanders's push his face on the air to get some free time. I think it's shameful that he would even consider such a thing. But a lot of people likes 'em their renegades.

(11,546 posts)NY, MI, NV, etc. all get one but not the state with the largest electorate?
Bernie WANTED to debate Hillary but she refused. That's on her. So at this point I definitely think that he should just do what he needs/wants to do.

Seriously, while it would be nice to see candidates spend more time in this state, at this stage another debate between Sanders and Clinton isn't going to change anyone's mind. And even if they did agree to one in the scant time remaining, due to the sheer physical size of the state most of the population would be excluded no matter where they held it.

(744 posts)The best part is this comment:
"It should be in a big arena somewhere. And we can have a lot of fun with it. I'd love to debate Bernie" he said. "The problem with debating Bernie is he's going to lose. Because honestly his system is rigged. Just like our system is rigged."
1) He recognizes that Bernie is going to lose.
2) If the system is rigged on both sides, and Trump is saying that Bernie will lose because it's rigged, isn't he essentially also saying that he only won because it's rigged. Nice.
