2016 Postmortem
Related: About this forumA Bernie vs. Trump debate is akin to men telling women to leave the room while the men
discuss the major issues of the day. Such a debate would be raw, naked, White male privilege on display to the world.
--On edit--
There have been more than enough debates between Hillary and Bernie. The voters know each of them by now and have largely rendered their decision. There's no need for Hillary to debate Bernie at this point.
Bernie is NOT going to get the nomination. By even entertaining this idea, he's showing disrespect to Hillary, to the Democratic voters, and to women in general because he refuses to acknowledge her position. That is sexism pure and simple.
Did Hillary offer to debate John McCain in 2008?

I am looking forward to this debate. Trump is all empty bluster; Bernie will destroy him!

(1,712 posts)That's writing a lot of extra meaning into it that just isn't there. Sanders is pulling out all stops to keep his campaign going. Trump wants more airtime. If Hillary wanted to set something like that up, she could also. It would take one statement from her campaign to make a 3-way debate happen, and news outlets would be frothing for it.
hueymahl
(2,497 posts)but a bit of a stretch. Not everything is sexist. Unless you're Trump, then everything is sexist. And all about Trump. Or his tiny hands.

(26,060 posts)And I'm a strong Hillary supporter. I don't believe in giving fox any credibility whatsoever so I had no problem with her turning them down - it would have been 1-2 hours of fox trying to make Democrats look bad. As far as Trump/Sanders, donnie's campaign has already said it was a joke.
Bluenorthwest
(45,319 posts)so the 'No Credibility for Fox News' ship has already sailed. She can't do Fox News events then say she's not doing it because she'd never do Fox News. That's an excuse that would have worked in March.

(10,751 posts)...BUT she did agree to debate Bernie in California in May.
She has reneged on that agreement.
She and her campaign have, no doubt, calculated that the damage from reneging on this debate is less than the potential damage from having the debate.
We'll see. It certainly will not raise her trustworthiness in the eyes of voters.

(9,323 posts)Yes it would kind of pointless but it's just someone trying to put a shot of energy into his campaign by debating, not another man, but the nominee of the other party. It's not sexist in any way. The only way it is sexist is that Bernie is a man. In that case, any man is automatically sexist for not being a woman. Is that what you are saying?

HillareeeHillaraah
(685 posts)Before officially securing the nomination....and if that event had nothing to do with Sanders - rather they debated around him.....the Sanders supporters would lose their collective minds and burn up their keyboards.
The runner up agreeing to debate the republican presumed nominee is just an attempt at raising money for Sanders and it will serve as a spectacle for trashing the democratic front runner.
That his supporters don't see it for what it is, is just sad.
And you wonder why we don't just hand over the reigns of the democratic party to him. He consistently exhibits poor judgement that puts Sanders' needs first.
AlbertCat
(17,505 posts)I don't think so if Sanders had agreed to debate, and then backed out.
I guess you all are just pissed Hillary isn't the only one around. Have been from the start.
Most of us don't like a monarchy. This is the USA.
HillareeeHillaraah
(685 posts)Strategically deciding that she didn't need to debate Sanders a tenth time. It is a contest after all, one that's she's working to win. Strategically there's no need to spend a night at the end of his wagging finger. You can say that not agreeing to the last debate deprives the voters of a chance to get to know the candidates but that's rather disengenuous. In this digital age, the information is everywhere. And Sanders never really says anything different. (And that's to his credit. He's remarkable consistent in his message).
This is about Sanders deciding he's going to behave as though he is the nominee by participating in a debate with the republican nominee. It's thoughtless, and puts Bernie first in Bernie's mind. Because he would have raised money off of the appearance while simultaneously trashing the democratic front runner. You may find that behavior admirable. I don't.
As to the monarchy thing, I don't believe the reigning Queen of England had over 13 million citizens cast a vote for her.
Words have actual meanings. 'Voting' is not part of the definition of "monarchy".
AlbertCat
(17,505 posts)Because she does so poorly debating, and complaining about wagging fingers just makes Hillary supporters look stupid and reaching for any kind of way to discredit Sanders, that never works. Just like this OpEd..... it's always complete malarkey.... to the point of comedy.
A while back from the Hil Cave it was all "He should be going after Trump!"....and now ...
Too funny!
HillareeeHillaraah
(685 posts)Going after Trump vs. arranging to debate with the republican nominee when Sanders is NOT the democratic nominee...well, it tells me all I know about your ability to reason logically.
It's curious to see his side defend the actions that are actually bringing his numbers down even further. Like the NV melee, and this debate shenanigans.
Go figure, huh?
AlbertCat
(17,505 posts)Uh
Hillary is not the nominee either.
In fact, because she backed out like a coward and continues to snub people makes this not about her much at all. This attempt to make it about her (except that it clearly shows her uppity cowardice) shows your inability to reason quite clearly and that Hilts are desperate...again.
HillareeeHillaraah
(685 posts)Bwahahahahaha.....
Don't address his behaviors, pivot and make it about Hillary. Classic.
June 7th pal....done.
AlbertCat
(17,505 posts)She backed out.... like a coward. She covers it with snubbing and cackling.
her cronies are rigging it for her because she's too cowardly to win straight up.
This is the 2nd time a "nobody" anyone had heard of has threatened her in a short time while she's been running since the 20th century. That never-heard-of won the last time so anything and everything has been done to make sure this one doesn't catch up and overtake her again....
HillareeeHillaraah

(12,799 posts)If the woman in the room chooses not to exchange ideas and argue their merits, that's for her to decide. To demand that everyone else shut up and sit down because she has no interest ... That's pulling the gender card in a very not good way.
You may be, and probably are correct that Bernie's window is closing. If we want his ideas out there to be considered, debated and discussed, then this is the time. I can truly say I do not appreciate the entitlement attitude that because she is the likely candidate, she should have a monopoly on ideas and platform to air them. That will keep us mired in the absolute impossibility of anything better ever. And if you haven't noticed, voters aren't too keen on that theme.

(17,505 posts)Hillary said she would debate and them backed out of it.
And Hillary is white. (in case you didn't notice, which it seems a lot of people haven't)
