A contrarian view: A Sanders v Trump debate would be a no lose proposition for Clinton

This may go against the grain of the conventional wisdom, but bear with me:

If Sanders debates Trump and Trump makes Bernie look bad (which I doubt would happen), its obviously a plus for Clinton since it undercuts the argument that Sanders can take down Trump in a cakewalk.

If Sanders debates Trump and Sanders makes Trump look bad, it weakens Trump and probably doesn't end up changing the ultimate outcome of the Democratic nominating process (i.e., a good Sanders performance v. Trump probably isn't going to cause voters and/or superdelegates to change their positions in sufficient numbers to deny the nomination to Clinton).

1. It shows exactly how Trump would attack, in a REAL debate where there is no same-team restraint.

.

Also, it helps to get the Democratic message out to the 40% of the nations viewers, as this message would get carried to the hundreds of media outlets and dozens of networks that generally tow the FOX (contrary) viewpoint. You know, that stupid, fair reporting need that implies that equal weight must be applied to both sides of a discussion. FOX would not be able to cut Sanders out.

Two armies of angry supporters having to be kept physically separated, finger-waving rants, endless interruptions, slack-jawed moderators wondering what the hell they'd gotten themselves into, and all the Hillary supporters sitting at bars drinking Cosmos and enjoying the unexpected present.

Count me in!

4. The problem with this is that you're looking at this as tRump vs. BS. But tRump realizes

that it still really is tRump vs. Secretary Clinton. tRump doesn't really care about BS, he cares about the free TV exposure, the national audience. Anyone that doesn't realize that tRump is going to be spending the majority of his time attacking Secretary Clinton is naïve.

And that's going to leave BS in a bad spot ... he can either trash Secretary Clinton, defend Secretary Clinton or ignore tRump and just do his own infomercial. No matter what he does, he will piss off a good group of people.

So yeah, be default, Secretary Clinton will probably come out of this a winner, even by not being there.

6. Trump doesn't really debate.

He just made wisecracks and needled his opponents in the Republican debates. He had the audience laughing and eating out of his hand as he make jokes about the other candidates and got them so rattled that they reacted by saying stupid things that made them look bad.

Trump will use the same tactic against Sanders, and keep poking at his weak spots. Sanders can't help himself, he'll arrive preloaded with bitter recriminations and a thin skin, and Trump will make him look like a doddering fool.

And that he'd rather run against Sanders than Clinton.
