than they were when they won in 2004.

It's just how it works - the first time event draws the biggest crowds, whether you're a baseball team winning their first WS in 76 years or the first black man heading to being elected president.

Anybody think Reagan drew bigger crowds when he ran for his second term than he did when he ran against Carter?

The network that spent the afternoon after the first debate gushing how Romney "looked presidential." Apparently, to CNN lying to a national audience every 90 seconds and behaving like a bully is presidential. Hard to take anything they say seriously.

I always turn to CNN when something major is happeing in a confined area, such as the Aurora, CO shootings. Of the major 24X7 "news" channels, CNN has more local affiliates and can get the information more quickly than the others.

Other than those times, I only have it on my television when my wife turns it there.

They only got Obama in because they liked the excitement of a black president and wanted him to deal with all the crap they caused.

The venues they are selecting are relatively easy to secure and have limits for seating. If you recall from 2008, many more events were open air in massive green spaces with loads of advance notice to get people out. They wanted the optics of huge crowds to sell the message last time. Everyone knows the message and the messenger this time out, so I am pretty sure the focus has been on GOTV, and some of the free wheeling bit has been surrendered in the name of security.

Every rally Obama attends is classified as a NSE by virtue of his presence from a security standpoint.

I have no doubt this is one reason the crowds have been smaller. A 70,000 person rally would be very challenging for the secret service. The bigger the crowd the bigger the strain on the secret service and local law enforcement. And having many that size back to back to back during the height of the campaign would make it even more challenging.

I also believe the campaign is on the hook for some of the costs associated with security.

But Blitzer wouldn't bother to consider any of those circumstances.

Nov 2012

1. Calm down.

2. Obama's crowd in his final rally of 2008 was 70,000. They have not had a 70k rally during the last couple months of the campaign. And that's OKAY.

3. My point was now that he is president the level of security is considerably higher than it was when he was a candidate. I offered that as a possible reason for not having 70k-100k rallies.

Let me ask you something, does Romney travel with 1-2 decoy helicopters as the president does when he flies aboard Marine One? Is his campaign plane anything on the level of Air Force 1? Surely you're not saying the level of security is the same for a nominee as it is for a president? A child would understand the difference.

5. Please don't speak to me as though you are tweeting Wolf Blitzer. In other words, don't be such an obtuse tool.

He isn't traveling in Air Force 1 and he doesn't have an armada of security assets deployed wherever he goes. He doesn't have the football. He gets full protection but it's not on the level of what a sitting president would get.
