I need your help!!

I am new to DU but have spent a great deal of time on another sight with a mixed crowd. Most of the conservatives come up with the craziest lies and a small group of us are kept busy debunking the hogwash they throw out there.

One that has thrown me for a loop is the supposed 500 Admirals, Generals to endorse Romney that is supposed to be published in a ad in the Washington Times on monday

Besides just asking how many of these officers have stock or jobs ( Halliburton and KBR ) in defense industry or why should we care about what a group who enjoy free health care and a guaranteed retirement thinks ( PS I know our men and women deserve our support so don't hate please ) or we can't AFFORD more wars and might the biggest reason not to vote for Romney

Some of what i found so far,,

Armed Forces Show Overwhelming Support for Obama http://www.opensecrets.org/news/2012/10/armed-forces-show-overwhelming-supp.html

If you can help me form a few good responses it would be greatly appreciated,
Thanks

Trumps them all. And this http://www.democraticunderground.com/1014290050. And, it's the Times. And it's an ad, not a headline. I wouldn't waste my time with this if I were you. Just hit 'em with Colin Powell - I'm sure that alone will overtax their brains.

I wouldn't bother arguing with them. You're not going to change their minds. Facts mean nothing to some conservatives (well, most that I've met). It's a waste of energy.

you can't talk to military…

My daughter and son in law were loyal dems until he just finished 3 years working at pentagon and became close friends working 12-15 hour days with generals.

now in Colorado they are voting for Mitt. I had argument with my daughter the other night about it.

For them its all about Obama cutting the military, doesn't matter it was manipulated by republican congress in a black mail attempt about the debt ceiling. Doesn't matter the military is already too large or that their personal finances won't change a bit with the cuts.

So just stay away is my advice, you will never win with these people. They are convinced just like we are that they are right.

changing their minds . Its a board with heavy traffic and most people look in and don't post. It is to give these people a balanced view to base their opinion on. Some people are open to reason when presented with the info. I can't tell you how many people will tell you " I never heard that before"

My favorite quote is, I don't mind if you don't care for my president, I do mind if it is because of a lie.

People should make up their own minds no matter what these 500 military aristocrats think.

They are just trying to protect the military's 50% lion's share of all discretionary federal spending:
http://www.forbes.com/forbes/2011/0328/billionaires-11-capital-flows-mallory-factor-real-defense-budget.html

But in recent years a growing percentage of that budget has been spent on activities that don't involve traditional national defense. These include nation-building, policing foreign nations, humanitarian missions and ferrying executive- and legislative-branch leaders and their attendants around the globe. While these activities may be tangentially related to our standing in the world, they do not enhance our war-fighting capabilities; rather they relate more to the success of our foreign policy than to our national defense.

More details about discretionary spending from the Federation of American Scientists http://www.fas.org/sgp/crs/misc/RL34424.pdf

Military spending has increased sharply over the last decade. On average, from 2000 to 2010, defense outlays grew 6.8% per year in real terms, whereas non-defense discretionary outlays grew 5.6% per year in real terms.

and Mitt has her vote.

I am sure all the generals are of similar pedigree.
