If a Republican wins by one vote, it's a mandate for Brokaw, political capital to be spent. If a Democrat wins by a million votes, well, it was still close enough that you can't consider it a mandate.

The real issue for Brokaw is that tax increase for the top brackets. Obama has run on this - it's been a clear hallmark of his campaign since Day 1 that "everybody pays their fair share" and that those "at the top pay a little more."

When Obama wins, he's got a damn good argument that he made that part of his pitch, and the people voted for it, and that's that. But Brokaw can't possibly have that. Thus, "no mandate" language starts filtering in now. This is nothing other than the corporate press fighting the next battle, the tax battle.

He lost the popular vote and got the electoral vote because of the supreme court. Yet he managed to get his tax cuts passed, and that was before 9/11 after which everyone freaked the fuck out and congress gave him whatever he wanted (Patriot Act, War in Iraq, Medicare Part D, etc).

And after being reelected by a very narrow %, he declared that he had a mandate and proceeded to push through social security privatization (failing badly) and destroy the credibility of his party...

with his "defeat" of Kerry by under 600 votes he had a mandate and he was going to spend it. You know, the guy who was never really elected by anyone. MANDATE???

He'll be one of the most rapidly forgotten newscasters the corporate chiefs have ever foisted their spin-propaganda on the American people with. Reliable mouthpiece for the 1%, even when he has to step in a pile of shit to back away from telling the truth staring him right in the face.
