http://www.kgw.com/news/local/Investigations-into-ballot-tampering-deepens-in-Clackamas-County-177119071.htmlCollecting ballots door-to-door is not against Oregon law.
"We believe our volunteers clearly followed the law," said Jared Mason-Gere with Oregon House Democrats.
West Linn police said they were dispatched after getting a call from the Clackamas County Election Office.
"It's now under investigation, we're looking to see exactly what happened and why police stopped those folks," said Oregon Secretary of State Kate Brown. ...

... officers made them return the one ballot they had collected ... the shift supervisor received a call from the Clackamas County elections office saying someone had complained.
"It was the elections department that was saying that they [the volunteers] weren't authorized," says West Linn Police Sgt. David Kempas.
Oregon statute does not outlaw independent collection of vote-by-mail ballots ....
=====================
Of note: the Clackamas County Election Office is controlled by a Republican, and there is an ongoing investigation into a Republican office worker altering mailed-in ballots. That story here:

(17,651 posts)Well yea I'm nitpicking.......unless I missed one, those headlines in the link say "Democratic" not "Democrat canvassers.
And damn right, we need some serious Election Reform in this country. Too many anti-Americans and false patriots attempting to undermine The People's voices.

(16,079 posts)The police should have at least a working knowledge of certain laws and this is an example!

(15,262 posts)The elections office is an authority, presumably, with respect to election law. However, the "people" are partisans! Note how a State Rep. posted false info about the law on her Facebook page. Another partisan response by someone in a position of authority, lying about the situation instead of checking the facts.

(15,262 posts)Ballot tampering and voter suppression from Clackamas County Election officials?
By Scott Moore - http://ouroregon.org/sockeye/blog/ballot-tampering-and-voter-suppression-clackamas-county-election-officials
The question has become resounding... what in the heck is going on in Clackamas County Elections?
In the past few years, the office has been the source of elections irregularities that have called into question the integrity of the elections in the county. County Clerk Sherry Hall's record of making partisan statements have made her a champion of the Tea Party, but have raised major alarm bells with everyone else.
Yesterday, the question asked by the press, by voters, and even by Clackamas County Commissioners was if the credibility of Clerk Sherry Halls office could sink any lower.
Yes, it turns out. Yesterday eveningon the same day the Department of Justice announced it was investigating Halls office for ballot tamperingnews came out that the Clackamas County Elections office sent out the West Linn police to stop two Democratic volunteers from engaging in perfectly legal Get-Out-The-Vote activity.
....
Sherry Hall may be the Tea Partys favorite elections official, but everybody else in the state should be outraged by what's going on under her watch.

(50,955 posts)Given that the post says it's legal, I'm really surprised Republicans haven't sent out a lot of people claiming to be Democrats to collect Democratic ballots. Big bonfire following.
How does Oregon prevent that?
Coyotl
(15,262 posts)There is no prevention on the part of the state, except the regulation that you convey that you are not "official" when doing so. People are not stupid enough to hand their ballots to anyone. After all, this is Oregon!
