New poll shows Warren leading Brown

By Noah Bierman, Globe Staff

A new poll shows Elizabeth Warren leading Senator Scott Brown by six percentage points, the seventh of nine taken since October that show the Democratic challenger ahead of the Republican incumbent. The poll by Public Policy Polling, a Democratic leaning firm, found Warren ahead 52 percent to 46 percent.

The automated telephone poll of 1,089 likely voters was taken Thursday and Friday and has a margin of error of plus or minus 3 percent.

The poll found Brown has a high approval rating, with 52 percent saying they approve of his job performance and only 36 percent disapproving. Usually, that’s a good sign for an incumbent.

But the poll found Warren is consolidating Democrats behind her, securing 84 percent of their votes. That’s the key to her victory in a presidential year, where the party has a three-to-one advantage over Republicans in registration, as well as an extensive organization to get voters to the polls. The survey found President Obama leading Mitt Romney by 15 percentage points, 57 percent to 42 percent.
