You know, maybe the Mayans were really on to something....

.. with their 2012 'end of the world' prophecy. Except they never said it was the 'end of the world' it was marking the 'end of an era', a massive change in the world as we know it.

Don't think, one way or another, by Dec 21, 2012 we won't have that? (given the election in November)..

then again, the Mayans never knew about the Julian/Gregorian Calendar. You take that into account and the Dec 21 date is wrong... it's closer to .... November 6, 2012.

Ponder.

Vote Democratic 2012.

It was just the end date (perhaps, depending on how it is correlated with Julian/Gregorian systems) for the (first) cycle of their "Long" calendar. Like their "Round" calendar it was a "period" calendar.

it's worth emphasizing that this mesoamerican calendar (as used by several cultures -- including the Maya -- in Central and South America before European colonization) does not predict an apocalypse. It never did, despite what the movie "2012" told us. ... Archaeologists studying this fascinating culture have been able to decipher their many calendars, but their longest period calendar -- the "Long Count" -- is what set alarm bells off in the fertile minds of a few conspiracy theorists, doomsayers and guys looking to make a fast buck.

The Long Count was used by the Maya to document past and future events. Their other calendars were simply too short to document any date beyond 52 years. The 52-year calendar -- known as the "Calendar Round" -- was used as it spans a generation, or the approximate lifetime of an individual.

Using the Calendar Round meant that events in a person's life could be chronicled over 52 years -- or 52 "Haab's," spanning 18,980 unique days. ... Now, purely as a consequence of the Long Count's numerical value, many Mayan scholars agree that the calendar will "run out" after 5,126 years (or, at least, it's first cycle does).

The Mayans' calendrical and astronomical calculations were very sophisticated. But then the Spanish came and ... well, Eduardo Galeano tells it so beautifully.

The Mayans did not follow the calendar we have now.

They did not have a leap day, thus, 12-21-12 was a long time ago.

today are sooo damn bizarre, I can only think the worst of what will happen to this country if they get back in, in full force. Border protection will have to be employed to keep people in not out.
