Judge orders early voting extended at site in Fla. where suspicious package caused delays

By Associated Press, Updated: Sunday, November 4, 1:13 PM

ORLANDO, Fla. — A judge extended early voting hours in one Florida county on Sunday after the state Democratic Party sued in an effort to give people more time at the polls.

Some voters had faced waits several hours long on Saturday, the last scheduled day of early voting. The judge ruled on a lawsuit filed late Saturday in Orange County after an early voting site was shut down for several hours. The Winter Park library was evacuated when a suspicious package — a cooler — was found outside. It was later detonated by a local bomb squad.

Bill Cowles, the Orange County elections supervisor, said that voters who show up on Sunday will be asked to use a provisional ballot because the Republican Party of Florida had appealed the decision. The extra hours will be offered at only the Winter Park library.

The state party also filed a federal lawsuit Sunday morning seeking more voting time in Palm Beach, Miami-Dade and Broward counties.

I would not be using a provisional ballot which might or might not count if I could help it. LisaL Nov 2012 #4
I saw that on another thread, I'd much rather do an Absentee Ballot flamingdem Nov 2012 #6

He is trying to discourage people from coming out. Provisional ballots will be counted but they undergo scrutiny...signatures must match, and they will check the rolls to be sure the person hasn't voted already.

But if watched by Obama lawyers, they will be counted once it is ascertained they have not already voted...at least I hope so.

Here's what got me as I will be working the polls in Palm Beach County on Tuesday:

***Voting in Miami-Dade County and Palm Beach County didn't wrap up until early Sunday morning because voters standing in line when the polls closed were allowed to vote.***

Then another hour to count and justify the ballots and break down the voting equipment....

The couple other counties will allow Sunday voting using absentee ballots. Voters in Orange county should demand the same if they aren't allowed to use regular ballots.

The 60 minutes report was about the past and neutral, not about discouraging votes now, that's why I believe what he said.
