Illinois Dem race a battle for party's future (10th District)

By DAVID CATANESE | 3/9/12 7:33 PM EST

A combative House primary in a northern Chicago suburb is being framed as a battle for the future of the Democratic party.

In one corner are national progressive groups, Howard Dean, Russ Feingold and The Nation magazine. In the other, are House Minority Whip Steny Hoyer, the chair of the party’s recruiting effort, a slate of local and county elected officials and The Chicago Tribune.

Liberals are backing Ilya Sheyman, a baby-faced 25-year-old former foot soldier for MoveOn.org while more establishment-oriented Democrats are behind management consultant Brad Schneider.

“It’s clearly a bellwether for whether progressives or Blue Dogs are going to be the face of the Democratic Party heading into November,” said Sheyman. “It’s not just one of these districts to turn from red to blue. It’s a place where we can make a big difference for middle-class families.”

Ilya Sheyman does NOT look like a baby. If anything, he looks a bit older than he is. 2ndAmForComputers Mar 2012 #1

needs to go in this state, I hold them responsible for the dire finantial problems we are encountering in this once great but always corrupt state. I will be giving a donation to Ilya Sheyman.

If it did, that district's seat wouldn't have been in the hands of Republicans for the last 12 years. (Noogies to your head for making such a statement.)

The 10th (which has recently been redistricted) contains the wealthy and Waspy North Shore suburbs, up to and including Highland Park, which has a large Jewish population (Both Ilya and Schneider are Jewish.) Now it also contains more working class suburbs to the north, for the first time. Mark Kirk (now Senator Kirk) was the Republican who held that district for more than a decade. Now ultra-right-winger Robert Dold holds it, and people are not happy: he's way more conservative than Kirk was.

Perhaps Ilya's age won't count against him: maybe all those Jewish mama's will think he reminds them of their sons ... such a shaynah punim. But I don't know if they will offset the other voters in the district. Anything is better than Dold.
