It is compartmentalized from him. At least it should be.

(5,861 posts)He pointed out that it has a similar population as Vermont, yet has little representation in congress.
It is great that he is doing this. I don't know if Clinton has the same position, but there is no way she would even give this a word if not for him.

(45,493 posts)"Giving the 600,000 residents of the District of Columbia their fair representation in Congress is long overdue. It is why I applaud the House of Representatives for finally passing the DC Voting Rights Act today. Our nation was born out of a struggle against taxation without representation. And yet, even as we endeavor to promote democracy around the world, it is shameful that we deny our own American citizens who live in the District the right to voting representation in Congress. This injustice tarnishes our democracy as a whole. The right to be represented in the national legislature is fundamental to our core American values. I hope the Senate will act swiftly to pass the DC Voting Rights Act and that the President will not delay in signing this long overdue legislation into law." Then Senator Clintons Statement about the 2007 DC Voting Rights Act (2007)
In 2015, when asked about her support of DC by Delegate Eleanor Holmes Norton, Clinton told her, I have always been with you, Eleanor. Of course I support D.C. statehood.
Sanders first mentioned it in 2015

(5,861 posts)The District of Columbia Fair and Equal House Voting Rights Act of 2007 (H.R. 328) was the first to propose granting the District of Columbia voting representation in the House of Representatives while also temporarily adding an extra seat to Republican-leaning Utah to increase the membership of the House by two. The addition of an extra seat for Utah was meant to entice conservative lawmakers into voting for the bill by balancing the addition of a likely-Democratic representative from the District. The bill still did not make it out of committee.

(45,493 posts)Did you forget the sarcasm smilie because you essentially saying that DC residents aren't "worthy" of having the right to vote?
Blue_Tires
(55,445 posts)Which has been a dumpster fire of corruption, graft, embezzlement and mismanagement for 40+ years now...
As a "state" there are some criteria they'd have to meet. I'm not making this up or just pissing on D.C. residents, this is just how the discussion goes...

(45,493 posts)seem to put enough funds into the system to keep it running, but nice try trying to justify keeping a group of African Americans from having the right to vote.
Blue_Tires
(55,445 posts)Black folks in D.C. can't vote? I guess the mayor, city council and president appoint themselves?? As for congress, it's no secret and everyone knows what they're giving up when moving to the District, and believe me, nobody is holding a gun to their heads, preventing them from moving a few miles across the border...
Instead of statehood, the most logical solution would be to return them to Maryland, but Annapolis has repeatedly said they want no part of that headache...

(94,624 posts)Hillary Clinton backed the push to grant statehood to Washington, D.C., and lambasted right-wing ideologues in Congress for meddling in its affairs in a new op-ed written just a month before the districts Democratic primary.
The Democratic front-runner promised to be a vocal champion for D.C. statehood in a Wednesday piece published in The Washington Informer, an African-American newspaper that serves the metro area.
Lacking representatives with voting power, the District of Columbia is often neglected when it comes to federal appropriations, she wrote.
Washingtonians are Americans, too, and its time they had a say in their own status.

I took this poll that showed that people think he would use his power best in office. But when I looked at the questions, I realized I really do have faith in Hillary: http://powerinthepubliceye.org/

And he knows that his millions of supporters want him to stay in the primary until a nominee has been officially decided.
Anybody who doesn't like that can take a nice vacation until July 25th.
